The messenger; Daisy, Runner.
It was Runner’s favourite day of the week: his day off. The Factories granted workers who had been employed there for more than five years – which was rare – one free day a week. Most spent this time resting, catching up on much needed sleep, but Runner refused to waste the little free time he had. He had been born with stamina that was rare among the non-Designed. He could survive on just a few hours of sleep a night without making the mistakes at work that got so many people fired. It was hard enough to find a job at the Factories as it was, what with the amount of unemployed who would do just about anything to find official work. It required knowledge about machines, which wasn’t something many people in the outskirts of the city had. Luckily, Runner’s father had been a mechanic, so he had grown up tinkering with technology. For a non-Designed, life was as good as it could get for Runner. He had a home and a job, which was more than the majority could say, and even though his work didn’t pay nearly enough, it was something.
Sometimes Runner had to work as a messenger for one of the gangs on his day off, in order to earn enough money to be able to afford food and clothes. Even though he preferred to spend his day doing something else, he didn’t mind running from one part of the city to the other just to tell someone this and that. Although the messages usually weren’t very pleasant to deliver, he knew he was much more patient than most messengers were, and that helped him justify this part-time job to himself. He hated seeing the scared looks on the faces of the people he’d just told they only had a few days left to pay off a huge loan, but at least he didn’t make a scene. All he did was deliver the news. No violence, no shouting, no threats. People did what they had to do to survive in the outskirts, and most of the time it involved morally questionable deeds. No one judged each other for it. Everyone knew that was just the way things went in Kaguatan.
Today Runner was told to find a Failed, blind in one eye, someone by the name of Iorden Bael. Runner had heard of him before. He was a much-loved mechanic in the Southeast side of the city. It was uncommon for Failed to be popular among the non-Designed, but somehow Iorden had managed to win over the hearts of the locals. Runner wasn’t looking forward to visiting the one-eyed mechanic, but he knew better than to ignore his orders. He was a faceless messenger, easily replaced and easily forgotten. Crossing those in charge was never a good idea.
It took him a while to get to that part of the city, but Runner enjoyed the journey. The island was so large that it was impossible to know every part of it well, but Runner took pleasure in finding new shortcuts and hideouts around the city. As always, he avoided the centre – non-Designed were not welcome there. He was about halfway when he got lost in thought, which resulted in an almost immediate collision with another person. Startled, Runner immediately raised his hands in front of him apologetically. “Sorry!” he blurted out, a guilty smile spreading across his face as his eyes fell on the person he’d bumped into. “Sorry,” he repeated, this time more calmly and genuinely, “I wasn’t paying attention. My fault. You all right?”
