There is a small door in the one downstairs room of my parents' house. It used to open into a small room under the stairs that my brothers and I spent hours playing in, but since the downstairs has been renovated, it no longer does.
The door no longer opens at all.
The door no longer opens, except for the one time it did. When I was trying it out of old habit and older nostalgia. When it actually moved, and I could've fallen over from surprise, but instead leaned the other way to bend to see into that old room of delights and soft, warm memories.
Instead, I saw something else. Something long and thin and pointed, like a knife that smiles.
I closed the door, and went back upstairs.
That door has never opened, I tell my family, and that is what I want to believe.
