redraw of an old piece
angel doggies!!💗🪽✨
Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, but OOF, I never realized how sensitive this fandom is to criticism until the anime came out. I knew people would get sensitive when Malleus was 'insulted' in some way (as if he exists... guys I promise he won't read the 'mean' posts Mx. Raven wrote), but this is the first time I saw reviewers get spammed in the comments because they got one minor detail wrong in their review
(Sorry if the wording is weird, English isn't my first language :( )
Oh god, don’t remind me of the (loud minority of) M@lleus Dr@conia defenders 💀 They give the chill ones such a bad rep…
This is something I’ve noticed too… Not just in one place, but across multiple different platforms.
There’s many comments from Twsties correcting minor details reviewers get wrong (though I have to stress most of them are polite and not rude). I can kind of understand this reaction because, from what I hear, most reviewers do the bare minimum or no research at all before watching and may spread misinformation to their wider audiences about what Twst is. Twsties care about how an IP they love and associate with their own sense of self is perceived, so they’ll go out of their way to “protect” Twst. Still, this does imply a degree of defensiveness from our fandom.
Something else I’ve noticed is that Twsties are quick to jump to conclusions that if people dislike the Twst anime, then the opinion MUST belong to a bigoted straight male anime dudebro who hates it whenever something is not made with them as the target demographic in mind, call Twst “gay”, and/or hate it whenever something women have a thing they enjoy. Um??? That’s???? 😭 It isn’t all women in the fandom. And sure, there are dudebro extremists like that in the animanga space, but there are legitimate reasons to not like the Twst anime too. It’s fine if not everyone likes it; there’s clear flaws with the project and the genre won’t appeal to everyone. But again—we see defensiveness on display here.
I have many personal anecdotes of this nature myself. In under the span of 3-4 days, I must have received like… 5 separate asks assuming I “hated” the anime or was mostly pointing out the negative. They overlooked anything positive I said and equivocated critique and suggestions for improvement with hate. (I didn’t respond to all of them, but here are the ones I did reply to: part 1 / part 2 / part 3.) While most of asks seemed more hurt or confused than malicious, one (now deleted) comment went so far as accusing me of calling the anime “horrible” and that I was implying “no one should watch it”.
Anime reactions really did bring out the anger in some Twsties 💦 I feel like we don’t nearly see this level of defensiveness for other game to anime adaptations, at least not publicly. Usually it’s just long-time fans being excited about the anime (like Touken Ranbu) or long-time fans being sad or upset it’s not to the same standards as the original (like P5). I don’t recall seeing so many people rushing to make corrections or so many assumptions being made about “haters”. This fandom’s inability to accept critique and opinions that differ from theirs really did come out full-force here.
I have to wonder if this happened because Twst encourages fans being parasocial with the characters… That, plus the added “relatability” of the boys (especially the OB ones) makes fans deeply emotionally tied with the characters. And so whenever something contests with that bond, Twsties perceive it as a threat and get defensive. That’s just my theory though a gaaaaame theory.

I don't actually draw Touken ranbu that often, but lately insipiration hit and I had to draft these.
I wanted to use new materials I got for my birthday, too. Ink was done with my new preppy pen while the splash of color is thanks to the stabilo CarbOthello, which are chalk pastel pencils and it's the first time I use that medium! Those are definitely not your average color pencils!
My name is Heshikiri Hasebe. As long as my master orders it, I'll do anything asked of me.
