Upset About Secret Ice: a play
I’m manning up and posting one of my mini plays. I’d ask you all not to judge unless it’s nice/constructive :P
Number 5
Two men in their mid-forties are in a bar. They are wearing suits and drinking pints.
FRANK: You get a good look at it then?
HARRY: I did, Frank. I mean, I didn’t stare. I just, you know, glanced.
FRANK: You saw it though?
HARRY: Sure I saw it.
FRANK: What do you think?
HARRY: I dunno, I mean, I’m not a doctor Frank. I would go to your doctor.
FRANK: I suppose I should.
HARRY: I wouldn’t want to say everything was fine, you know? I mean, I’m not qualified to do that. I work in accounts.
FRANK: I know.
Pause.
HARRY: You see the match last night then?
FRANK: It hurts when I piss.
HARRY: Right.

(Lights up. We see a Costco food court. Two women, mid twenties, dressed in nurses' scrubs sit on opposite sides of a tiny white plastic table, overloaded with an especially large pizza in a box, lid folded under so the box sits at a jarring angle. They have finished half the pizza. They are really going at it.) Beth: Brad's like out of the picture. (takes a bite) I've completely let go, emotionally. Not like May. (a bite, interrupted) Hm! Now that I think about it, this is the first time I thought about him all week. (a bite and a long chewy pause) I think it's because of my new passion for Syria. Jen: (chews) hm. (takes a bite) (Lights fade)
(Lights up. Man lies in bed, on smart phone. Sunlight streams in window. It is 8am. He scrolls through posts on his phone. Scroll scroll scroll) Man (looking up): These messages are tangential to my life. They sap my energy, shake my resolve, and, frankly, bore me. (Pause. He looks at the phone. Pause. Scroll scroll scroll.) (Lights down. Sounds of going underwater).
