ALBUM REVIEW: M. Ward - More Rain

There are usually two types of people when it comes to rain. There are the sun-worshippers who frown at any forecast of rainy skies…and then there is the small contingent of us who love nothing more than to wake up on a cloudy morning to the sound of rainfall on our rooftops. To whichever camp you pledge allegiance, we can’t think of a better way to celebrate spring’s arrival than with M. Ward’s More Rain.

The Portland, Oregon native gives us a beautiful ode to the beauty that is rain with his latest record, which is also his eighth solo stint. More Rain begins with a minute-long track of howling wind, echoing wind chimes, and, you guessed it, rain. While the rain fades through the background of his sweet and softly sung love-song, “Pirate Dial,” it’s hard not to think that Ward has gone back to his front porch-lounging, AM radio aesthetic that we’ve come to love from albums like Transfiguration of Vincent and Transistor Radio. But just as the rain comes to an end in “Time Won’t Wait,” so do our conventions of where Ward is as a songwriter. Though fans of his early work won’t be eschewed, Ward reminds us that there’s still some rock-n-roll left in his Americana repertoire. On tracks like “Confession” and “Temptation,” we see a more plugged-in Ward than any previous albums, with even a guitar solo to boot. Do not let Ward’s buzzing Gibson Johnny A model scare you – though, sonically, there may be more variation in this album than we’re used to, this is still very much an M. Ward album. Besides, historically, very good things have come from folkies going electric.
