Young Sophie isn’t that great at magic, but her family wants her to attend the best magic school around so they send her to live with distant relatives to train for the school auditions. But when Sophie accidentally tangles her magic with a young water dragon named Lir, things get tricky.
I really, really enjoyed this book! Not only is the art magnificent, but the story is really touching and warms the heart. One of my favorite things was the breaking of cycles. The most poignant scene of that was when the Southern Dragon King is yelling at his son and has a flashback to his father hitting him and recoils, realizing he doesn’t want to be like his own father. And thus apologizes to his son.
In the story, Sophie has a voice that tells her mean things, and it’s so realistic to someone going through change or dealing with anxiety that I got a little emotional. Anyway, the story was fantastic, the art was great, and there were good lessons to be learned. I hope Wendy Xu continues to do graphic novels!

Crowned Kingdom was a large, bustling area with so many nooks and crannies to explore; her head throbbed with an ache urged by the cacophony of everyday life. Besaid, with all its daily farm activities and the temple humming with the Song of the Fayth had never done such to her. Perhaps it was all because these sounds were so foreign to her, but by the time she was finished exploring for the day, her temples ached for release from the tension that had grown around them.
I wonder...what everyone is doing right now. Her long stroll had wound her through the myriad of tents and stand at the Crystal Bazaar; she could have sworn that one of them had a sign that said, “Shoopuf Drool: Great for Aches and Pains, 100 Gil Only!”, but that particular tent had been manned by a shady hypello who eyed her from 50 feet away as he smoked a long, wooden pipe emitting purple smoke.
All the colors and noises were washed away as she made her way down the beach, sloughing through the sand in her boots.
I wonder...if I am missed.
Thanks you so much @warchiefeny

Book Review: Tidesong by Wendy Xu
★★☆☆☆
While the art is beautiful, I don't think the story quite lived up to its potential. Sophie as a character felt very hard to root for - I can see what the author was going for in how insecure she was, but inevitably, she came across as far more selfish and bratty. I did like Lir, but unfortunately, he wasn't enough to save the overall plot.
