Thundarr the Barbarian
By the Lords of Light, Thunder the Barbarian was created by Steve Gerber and produced by Ruby-Spears. The Saturday morning fantasy adventure set in a post-apocalyptic earth that had endured a great cataclysm caused by a comet having crashed into the moon and splitting it in two. This calamity has reshaped the world and a new civilization came about, one ruled by savagery, super-science, and sorcery.
Thundarr is a noble-hearted warrior who fights for justice alongside his companions, Princess Ariel (a formidable young sorceress) and Ookla the Mok (a mighty lion-like biped). The trio traversed this realm on horseback, trekking across the ruins of the old world with the goal of protecting the innocent from evil. The adversaries they match wits against include mutants, werewolves and sinister wizards who combine magical spells with re-appropriated technologies from the pre-catastrophe world.
Comic book legends Jack Kirby and Alex Toth aided in the original character designs for the show. Actor Robert Ridgely voiced the eponymous Thundarr; with actress Nellie Bellflower voicing Princess Ariel and actor Henry Corden providing the grunts and roars of Ookla the Mok. The series premiered in October of 1980 and ran for two fantastical seasons.
