It wasn’t that Mat didn’t like hanging out with Peter. Quite the contrary, he often enjoyed Peter’s company while with Laney or Ian. But when one of those two were around Mat could just sign and have his words repeated so Peter could understand, and he’d never actually seen Peter so much as attempt a finger-spelling.

Mat simply didn’t like the idea of writing everything that he wanted to say. So, with a nod to himself he tapped Peter’s hand and held onto his wrist with one hand while the other moved his fingers. “P-E-T-E-R” Mat pointed to Peter after, then gestured to himself before spelling himself. “M-A-T”

His phone came out of his pocket and he brought up a picture of him and his two younger friends. Pointing at Laney then Ian before continuing, being sure to keep his pace easy to follow. “L-A-N-E-Y, I-A-N”

While Mat wasn’t immediately aware of the other being anything but human, he definitely recognized the look of someone that didn’t understand what was going on with the people a few yards away. Not that Mat had a good look to see what they were doing in the first place. Lightly, he tapped the android’s arm.

It wasn’t often Mat heard a new language. It was like music to his ears and he understood the words as clearly as if the woman had spoken English. He’d immediately started to sign, his hands moving on their own accord until realizing part-way though a sign that she might not know sign. He turned a little bit to rummage through his bag and produce a notepad and pencil with which he hurriedly scribbled out a friendly hello in her own language.
