@fondationbeyeler #ThorwbackThursday to our past exhibition "PICASSO surreal" in 2005. The Fondation Beyeler devoted a large special exhibition to the surrealist art of Pablo Picasso. From 1924 to 1934, Picasso maintained complex contacts with the Surrealist movement founded by André Breton in 1924. During this period he developed an entirely independent variant of surrealism, on which the exhibition will focus. Apart from this core phase of Picasso’s surrealism, the phase from 1914 to 1923 will be taken into account, some works of which can indeed be called “proto-Surrealist.” Back in 1917, Picasso and the poet Guillaume Apollinaire coined the term “sur-réalisme” to characterize the artist’s revolutionary stage design for the ballet “Parade.” In addition, the exhibition extended to the 1935–39 period, represented by a group of key works.
