Thomas does not merely conduct an orchestra of musicians, he turns it into a large and powerful instrument in its own right and plays it masterfully. I went to see the particular performance by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra mentioned in the review was blown away. Their playing of Strauss piece, in particular, was such a full frontal assault on the senses that I was left reeling with delight.…

Right so, it's time for some more video. Christian Gerhaher sings Mahler's Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, from a Prom on 1st September 2010 with the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester under Herbert Blomstedt. This is in two parts because that's how it was uploaded to YouTube.
Wonderful singing, as you'd expect, but I'm also seriously impressed by the fabulous orchestral playing. (By the way: is the announcer's pronunciation of Gerhaher's name correct? I've always thought it was GER-hah-er, but he seems to be saying Ger-HIGH-er.)
The silence at the end is due to Blomstedt not letting his arms down, I suppose. It's so right (a shame, though, that the applause is cut off so unprofessionally).
