Re-reading my posts and there are so many childish mistakes.
Tautology, bad syntax, bad punctuation, spelling mistakes, lots of text with nothing to say...
I considered languages one of my strengths, something that have actually been put to use and beneficial. For many years I grappled with the fact that I am abhorrent at reading subtext, and knew that I’m not well-spoken, but thought that from technical standpoint I am passable. Like ‘a couple mistakes when absent-minded’ passable. These are not ‘couple’.
This is plain upsetting.
The Kitchens was brilliant. He was glad Helen picked his place to catch up with him. After gorging on what food the elves would provide, Arthur was only with a bottle of soda, finally ready to chat.
“Anyways, what’s been going on with you then?” He asked.
“Well, I’m working on applying for some jobs, looking for a place for us, and still trying to study for NEWTs, which I’m afraid I’m behind in.”
He waved his hand dismissively. “Not the boring stuff. Like your friends and Elliot-- You still like him?”
When he spoke, Helen covered her face with her hands, shaking her head. “Do you realize this conversation has been the same for the past seven years? You have asked me this every time.”
“What? What? What d’you mean?”
Helen lowered her voice, doing a clearly terrible impersonation of him. “’What’s up with you, Helen?’ Well, I have a lot of studying to do. ‘No, that’s boooring. What’s the interesting stuff?’”
“Oh, come on!” Arthur argued, “I’d only see you Christmas and Summer, and even now, we hadn’t spoken for awhile-- I want the interesting tidbits.”
Helen let out a sigh, but she was smiled at him after and Arthur just grinned back. “Sit back then-- And don’t interrupt!”
Arthur slid, comfortably into his seat, taking a long drink from his cola and motioned for her to proceed.
“I kissed a boy--” That had Arthur sitting back up, but Helen wouldn’t let him speak, “But he hates me and I don’t care about him, but still. We weren’t dating or anything-- Far from it.” She blushed slightly. “Don’t think of me any less.”
Arthur just took another swing, grinning wolfishly. “Get it, Bennet.” He’d never taken his religion so seriously considering tradition gave him enough freedom to do as he pleased. “Sounds like a dick though. Who is he? What’s his name-- Give me a visual.”
“He’s not important. Hey, have you spoken to Sam at all?”
“Uh, Sam Wise? Not really. Should I?”
“Well, yeah! He’s your friend.”
Arthur made a face, shrugging a bit. “Ehh, he’s always been more of your friend. I never made too much a fuss when Dad told us to stop hanging out with him because I felt like a third wheel. All you guys did was watch movies and play pretend. I just came over to eat his mum’s snacks.”
Helen frowned as he could tell she was recollecting the real memories of their childhood. “You didn’t like him?”
“Noooo, I said he’s fine-- we just like different things is all.” Arthur rolled his eyes.
“Well Sam thinks you were good friends and that you hate him now. You ought to say something.”
“Okay, okay, sure, I will.”
“You know, he has this secret Dungeons and Dragons game going along and a lot of people are really into it. You should ask him about it an--”
Arthur let out a loud groan. “Heeeleeen, don’t make me join his nerdy game.”
“It’s not nerdy! A bunch of guys just come together--”
Arthur snorted before calling out, “Ha! Gay!”
Helen slapped his arm. “Where’d you get that from?”
“Schooool, Helen. Leave me aloneee.” He whined.
“Don’t you say that to Sam.” She pointed at him. “And don’t you be mean to him either.”
“God, okay-- Enough about Wise, tell me about that Elliot guy.”
"Cam?” Helen sighed. “Cam knows that I like him. I didn’t even tell him. He knew all this time.” She didn’t seem very happy about that fact.
“He doesn’t like you back?”
“Well, he said, and I quote ‘I cannot currently reciprocate them.’ Feelings that is.” Helen ran her hand through her hair. “But the thing is, he’s, well, affectionate in his way! Like, we hug and he’s so nice to me and he holds my hands. He even gave me his mother’s heirloom hair clip comb-- Which is incredibly meaningful. It’s not like he’s going around flirting with other girls either. He’s said I’m his best friend and we know each other so well and we’d be really good for each other, I think, and in time, maybe he’ll like me back.”
It was the first time Helen ever really told him about this sort of thing, but he supposed it came with their change in relationship. It felt more open now and she was trusting him. Arthur would do his best to give his input and not make fun of her, which was what he’d like to do. “He’s leading you on.”
“What?” She seemed entirely aghast at even the notion.
“Helen, he didn’t say ‘yes’ and he didn’t say ‘no.’ ‘Yes’ would be for if he truly did like and want to get into a relationship with you. ‘No’ would be ending whatever romantic notion there was. ‘I cannot currently reciprocate them’ means he’s going to let you hope and let you believe that one day he’ll change his mind. You said it yourself, ‘maybe’ he’ll like you back. Are you really going to let yourself wait for someone? What if someone else comes along? Are you going to turn them down because maybe Elliot might like you back one day?”
It might have been harsh, but Helen had spilt hard truth on him and he would kindly return the favor. “And if you asked me, no matter how much a connection you have, he’s not worth it. He’s making you wait for him-- That’s incredibly selfish. When girls tell me they like me and I don’t like them, I just tell them that, then it’d over and we can all move on.” That was true, and perhaps, he did have a bias considering Elliot’s role in the trial.
“You’re my brother,” Helen said in a small voice, “Of course you have to say you don’t think any boy is good enough for me.”
Arthur shook his head. “Not the case, Sister. You’re definitely not good enough for Lochlan O’Hannigan.”
Helen scoffed. “Good, I like Emmet better.”
“Anyways,” Arthur lifted his shoulders, “That’s my take on it. Dump,” He clapped lightly, bottle in hand, “Him.” He clapped again. It’d been something this girl at his old school used to do. He figured it was appropriate for his sister.
“Well, what about you! Any girls at Hogwarts catch your eye?”
He blushed sheepishly. “There’s this older girl in my house-- Eliza. She’s really nice.”
Helen didn’t know who that was, but was eager anyways. “Really? Have you spoken to her? Do you guys get on?”
Arthur shook his head. “Well, I’ve been a bit of a prat to everyone, so I didn’t say a lot to her.”
“You’re an absolute nut. I suppose if you’re done with that then, now you can talk to her?”
He nodded. “Of course, certainly. Then it’ll all go swimmingly from there. She’ll see how charming I am, instantly fall in love, we’ll date, graduate, get drunken tattoos of our love, get married, fight over baby names, have a billion babies, figure out the key to immortality, and live forever.”
Helen laughed, first genuinely, then nervously. He could tell. “That sounds brilliant, Arthur. But that reminds me, I have one more thing to tell you.”
“If you’ve figured out immortality and was going to let me die, I’m going to go back to not talking to you, Helen.”
“No, it’s not that. It’s, well,” Helen turned around, letting her back face him, before she tugged on her right sleeve. After a bit of wriggling around, Arthur saw exactly what she was trying to show him.
“What the fuck, Helen?” He leaned close, reading it.
“It’s just.. Well, it was something I wanted and I just decided to get it.”
“I want one,” He whined.
“No, you’re underage.”
“Well, I could get one if my guardian says so and you’re my guardian!” Arthur protested.
“And your guardian says no.”
He frowned and looked over the words some more. “You’ve changed, Helen. You really have.”
Helen turned over, fixing her shirt again, looking over him promptly. “Good.”
