Tell me the meaning of Punk, Roxyfriend.
Iâm tired so you get a joke!
but seriously the thing about Punk is that itâs about individuality, and rejecting a stilted, commodified society. Itâs why the constant reference of âPunk is dead, and Punk killed itâ became a thing, because Punk became commercialized. When you could go and buy a high-end jacket, and a selection of patches, from the first store you go into?
Well, you canât call yourself Punk anymore.
Punk WAS always about pursuing your own goals. Not doing what you were told. Being in and of yourself a giant fuck you to society. Itâs why itâs always been associated with anarchism, and not the capital A âitâll be order without hierarchies!â Anarchism which is just communism for people who donât want to admit theyâre communists, but the âDrop your trash on the street, throw a fire bomb, fuck your neighborâ anarchism that is an absolute rejection of society.
Understanding that explains Cyberpunkâs origins, the âThe future will not be a Star Trek utopia, weâll be living in the fringes of this âperfectâ society of advanced technologyââ, and why so many stories are of the theme âwhat makes a person a personâ.
And itâs why people get upset when dipshits who have grown up on Green Day claim that they can define what Punk is for everyone else. They grew up ON commodified, commercialized, standardized punk. On punk that is, ITSELF, just another element of society, soft ârebellionâ that is just another element of the status quo. Just another arm of a political machine.
