Throwback Ska Thursday: The ‘97 booking of The Skatalites in downtown Bakersfield was exciting and truly bizarre. The band’s Winnebago rolled up and out walked original members: bassist Lloyd Brevett, saxophonist Roland Alphonso, drummer Lloyd Knibb, and singer Doreen Schaffer and the rest of the band to the stage for a quick line check. The band launched into “Freedom Sounds” and it was on for ska fans and curious Bako attendees who had no idea who they were. Legends! THEE SKATALITES 🇯🇲 ! Band was tight, Lloyd Brevett blew out the @madcaddiesofficial bass cabinet and Lloyd Knibb was mad at Cesareo’s drum kit 🤷🏻‍♂️. What a night it was.... The band hung out afterwards for autographs and chats. I hooked up Roland Alphonso with some Chinese food at Wing Wah (extra shrimp) and off they went to the next show far away from home. Still have the signed vinyl from that night (swipe left). Both Mad Caddies and Mento Buru released our debut albums this year. Random Fun Facts: Recorded at a studio space formerly owned by Neil Young (located across from @goldenroadbrewery - and at a house in Silver Lake) - @rockeryeric & IIreno of Reggae Nucleus Mag stopped by during one session,) engineered & produced by Matthias Schneeberger who worked with metal legends The Obsessed, and was the sound engineer for Nirvana’s first Euro tour.) We couldn’t get started without bringing him a 12-pack of the darkest beer we could find (a German thing?) Fun guy 👍🏽. Percussionist Marcos Reyes brought in Latin jazz legend Victor Pantoja (Willie Bobo, Malo) to play on “Ain’t That Right” and “Spanish Grease.” He jammed with a bottle of brandy at his feet and was a blast to be around, cover art by @marlonhightower 🎨. Always packed downstairs, but trying to get your measly guaranteed pay at the end of the night was a challenge. Club owner was a character. Throwback Thursday: We started out playing farmers market nights at SLO Brew until we built a big enough following to be a weekend draw. Crowds were always bananas! Some of the best times ever and the first time we were handed $1200 cash from the door. We couldn’t make that type of bread playing Bako in the 90s. When then-bandmates Scott & Robbie we’re students at Cal Poly we used to stay in the dorms and always get some Tio Alberto’s Cantina after the show. Sweaty nights and a lot of premium brews - and they fed us well. A triple-bill SKA scorcha in Fresno with #TheSpecials #LetsGoBowling - 1995? We had an early soundcheck, so we hung out in one of the nice dressing rooms, spotted a big ice chest full of Heineken and proceeded to drink it all. We didn’t know it belonged to The Specials and got yelled at. We had a great set though and ended up onstage dancing to “Simmer Down” with The Specials. All the bands were in top form.
