im curious if you know which specific illnesses have catastrophising as a symptom? or if everyone does it? i often go straight to a worst-case senario and am almost certain its already happened or going to happen and sometimes it make my breathing go a little funny and i hate feeling like that- an example would be, i'd let my dogs outside to run around and go to the bathroom and as soon as they leave my line of sight im certain they're not gonna come back or they've been hurt or something. help?
Hey Anon,
Thanks for your ask. Catastrophizing is classified as what’s known as a cognitive distortion or thinking error. Other examples of thinking errors are mind reading, all-or-nothing thinking and overgeneralising.
In truth, catastrophizing, as with other cognitive distortions, is something everyone will fall into from time to time. While it can be a feature of anxiety, depression or other mental health conditions, thinking in such a way does not mean you have a mental illness.
Having said that, if these thoughts are bothering you or causing you disfunction in your everyday life, I suggest that you talk to your doctor or a mental health professional. Here is a good article on catastrophizing and how to deal with it.
Hope this helps, Anon.

If you ever encounter a wild, unbelievable claim; a clearly, farcically fictitious notion; a cliché or stereotype that persists despite lacking a hint of verisimilitude; if you think that nobody could ever seriously believe it, then take amoment to consider that people seriously believe the following.
That the Earth is flat. That the universe is six thousand years old. That the Moon is a hologram. That the Apollo astronauts conducted negotiations with the people of Venus.
And remember that these aren’t even the most outlandish examples.
Professional Anxiety
Having a bout of moderate to severe anxiety symptoms when your a professional is an awkward experience. The crystallized knowledge I've learned over the years helps prevent any outbursts or obvious emotional meltdowns like crying, gross/fine motor agitation, panic attacks, impulsive decision making, etc... The rational part of the brain is able to put on the stops so that the thinking errors don't snowball into a giant mess. What happens instead, is a series of smaller squashed snowballs. Constantly. ------- "I upset someone... they aren't going to talk to me anymore... I shouldn't vent--" *squash* "I might be over budget. Shit, if I am, how is this going to affect Ryder's Birthday!? He's going to notice--" *squash* "I was short with that person. I'm a horrible mother/girlfriend/friend/therapist/teacher etc--" *squash* Etc Etc Etc My brain is trying so desperately to panic over -something- and I won't let it. But at the same time, it feels like an internal game of whack-a-mole.

Gautam tossed and turned in bed, the customer’s angry voice echoing in his head. He finally reached for his phone and dialed Dr. Gupta’s number. “Dr. Gupta, it’s Gautam. I’m so fired up, I can’t sleep.” “Easy there, Gautam,” Dr. Gupta’s calm voice soothed him a little. “What’s going on?” Gautam explained the situation, his frustration rising with each sentence. “They wouldn’t listen! It’s not…
