The Sangrai festival, celebrated by the Marma people of Bangladesh, is a vibrant New Year celebration that reflects deep cultural, spiritual, and communal values. Observed mainly in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, Sangrai marks the transition of the traditional calendar and usually takes place in mid-April, aligning with regional festivals like Thingyan in Myanmar.

Happy Burmese New Year  သင်္ကြန်

In Burma, New Year falls at the time of the Spring Equinox. Today (16th April 2020) marks the last night of the celebrations. During this time, people wear fragrant ‘thanaka’ on their faces. This is made by grinding the bark of the murraya tree. 

Volunteer Sanda does a tour of the Pitt Rivers Museum. During this tour, she points out a small piece of bark, in one of the cases. You can see it on the collections database. 

During her tour, like all the excellent Multaka volunteer guides, she tells a story that brings it to life.

Sanda – About Burmese Thanaka –(object number 1889.29.102 .3)

Hello, I'm Sanda, from Burma. I want to look at this 'Thanaka' which is from a piece of Mulberry tree bark. It grows in Central Burma, which is the hottest region in Burma.  

We grind the bark to make 'Thanaka' paste with a small amount of water on a circular flat stone called 'kyauk pyin' in Burmese. The paste is yellowish-white or cream colour. It smells really nice. You can design with 'Thanaka' paste on your cheek and nose in patterns, for example leaves, teddy bear, whatever you like. You can wear it on your neck, arms, legs, the whole body, which is to protect your skin from sunburn. When you put it on your skin, you feel cooling.  

Every year around April 13th celebrate Myanmar New Year Water festival ( so called Thin Guan) around the country according to Myanmar calendar since Buddha era ( over 2500 yrs ago) .

Copy version of Thai songkran is more famous because Thai Gov knows how to make money from tradition.
