The second photo is what I would normally post, but lately I've been thinking that since Instagram pictures are a mere 1080 x 1080 pixels, and my files are much larger, a huge amount of this wonderful detail is lost unless you crop in real close. So this first picture is cropped to exactly 1080 x 1080 pixels of the original file. Purists be damned, I'll crop however I want to. Wasp moth (Erassa angustipenna). I had never seen one of these until a few weeks ago, and now all of a sudden I'm seeing them all the time. It may not be the best disguise, but it works at least well enough that on average they don't get snaffled up by predators before breeding. Evolution is wonderful like that. Uncaring and without purpose, tiny random changes incrementing through unfathomabley long time periods, until one day you just happen to have a variety of seemingly unrelated creatures that are striped orange and black. And if it works, it survives. I think I brought this one home from the supermarket with me and accidentally put him in the fridge. He was on the bag of a vegetable I pulled out of the fridge later that day. After snapping a quick shot of him on the bag he made a run for it, and I tracked him down to an embarrassingly dusty corner, where you can see him cleaning himself of my shame. After doing some research I believe he is commonly called Shelford's Coackroach (Robshelfordia circumducta). This got me curious about who Shelford was and why he has his own cockroach. Cue Wikipedia. It turns out Robert Walter Campbell Shelford was quite the entomologist in the early 1900s, having discovered 44 new genera of cockroaches and 326 new species! This is a Mealybug Ladybird larvae and it looks suspiciously similar to a mealybug. That's probably for the best given that the adult lays her eggs in a mealybug eggsack, where this little imposter will eventually hatch and feast away.
