I’ve been thinking about this on and off for the past few weeks!
also you don’t know how giddy it makes me that you’re just out there, thinking about fucking Mary Ball Washington in the context of my series, like- ;-;
he has indeed met her! once! (or maybe twice hehe I haven’t entirely made up my mind yet)
so, to start at the beginning: her and George had multiple falling outs over the years, the last of which around the time of Lawrence’s death, and well. he still hasn’t entirely forgiven that.
George just cut most communication with her, only informing her of the really important stuff, like his marriage and acquisition of two children lmao
she was kinda pissy about that tho, not about the marriage (because Martha was rich af after her first husband perished under mysterious circumstances), but about the fact that George adopted the kids, which “may cause issues with the inheritance for any future real heirs”
soooo George very quickly noped out and slammed that small window of communication shut again lol
when he brought Alex home, he didn’t even tell her.
she found out through the grapevine that her son had recently collected a bastard from the West Indies, and she was fuming
like. not the good family name!!!!
anyway. George blocked any and all attempts of hers to meet Alex, because he was fully aware of what meeting his demon mother would do to a severly traumatised eight year old :)
so. the first time Alex met her was when he was around thirteen/fourteen, when she dropped by completely unannounced after years of radio silence, and he happened to open the door when she knocked.
to make an already too long story short: Alex, obviously not knowing who she was, went and got his father for her, George got Immediately berated for various offenses once he’d set one (1) foot into the fronthall, she called Alex a bastard like three times and insinuated he wasn’t worth anything because of that, called his mother a whore, insulted Martha by questioning why she hadn’t managed to give him an actual legitimate child yet, and when she tried to launch into a spiel about how Lawrence would hate to see the bloodline end like that, George fucking snapped and forcibly removed her wrinkly ass from his house.
unfortunately, he did so with a lot of yelling, and Alex was still doing really, really bad with any kind of aggression from any male, so the poor boy straight up had a panic attack (also, this was the first time he'd ever seen his father that angry and it really scared him, because Pa was supposed to be safe)
yeah. it was all a bit much for smol Alex :/
took a while to get him to calm again.

smut anon: I agree with you tbh but I gotta ask? How long will thin ice verse be? I think a good ending would be like to the end of the war or a little bit later. Will they still be together? I don't want the angst of them getting caught but also not of them breaking up. Alex can't really build the legacy he wants with John. Nonetheless I'm excited and I hope you won't torture all of us with angst too much. :D
I would agree with that! and I'm not sure how long the actual story will stretch, but there probably will be something about the end of the war, and I have a bit of an epilogue type thing planned for after the war :)
I don't think it's a spoiler when I say that they will still be together by the end of it!
and my version of Alex does want to make a name for himself, his own place in the world apart from his father, but in his mind, he doesn't need a lineage for that. I'm still playing around with something in that regard, but he doesn't need someone to carry on his name, just as his father doesn't need someone to do that with his name.

as for what's next for Thin Ice, first of all I'll finish Green Eyes! then I have a follow up for the last story in the series as of now, then the sfw part of a smut fic I wrote some time ago, and then probably an Alex sickfic :))
