The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN) Singapore (Creativity)
I was inspired by some of the delegates in our Senior MUN CCA and this further lead on to my curiosity and hunger for experience and knowledge on a regional scale. Joining THIMUN Singapore was undeniably one of my greatest decisions as of the start of this first academic year. I could not believe how I went from being clueless about how a United Nations conference would run like to joining one of the most recognized and distinguished Model United Nations conference in the world.
Standing as the delegate of Uruguay for General Assembly 4 (GA 4): Special Politics gave me a sense of pride and joy. One of the topics discussed in the GA was the International Cooperation for the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and this was the reason why I decided to join this GA in specific. I am interested in Physics related knowledge and Outer Space is one of the most salient technological discovery and advancements that relates widely to Physics.
During the four-day long debate, I was able to meet delegates from all over Asia including but not limited to: Taipei, India, Philippines and Malaysia. We shared our resolutions during lobbying after finding delegates with similar stances on the topic at hand. After the lobbying time has elapsed and the resolutions have been approved by the approval panel, debating time began.
It was unimaginable how many amendments were sent for each resolution totalling to a figure of more than 100 amendments with intents to either strike out, modify or add clauses to the resolution. To sum up the debating experience, I was able to observe and take part in several Point of Information to the speakers. There were delegates there that had previously taken part in more than 20 conferences in the past but there were also those that were joining a conference this big for the first time, including myself.
I firmly believe that joining this conference allowed me to open my eyes for a wider understanding of how smooth a United Nations conference can run and that there are many people that are so creative and share opinions that are similar to mine. I am truly inspired to aim for continuous self-improvement and growth because of this conference and I would like to emphasize the importance of coming out of our comfort zone. Lastly, I would like to add on that I have as well built quite a few friendships that would hopefully last lifelong.
