#thisWeek Down in the Bayou, where my mama's mama's folk are from. Where little cities are named w/ French and Native names. Where shotgun houses and big ass porches line sandy streets. Where you breathe the salt in through your nostrils because the sea is in the air. #Biloxi •••••••• This house is one of a few, where my childhood memories play. Almost every year we'd drive to this place and cousins would fill this yard w/ seafood, cups filled w/ drinkable spirits, card games, and loud talking. The saints and the sinners of the bunch put everything aside to enjoy each other. My grandmother was the eldest of this crew and she and almost all of her cousins are gone now.. The children and grandchildren (me) of that group are drifting. After Katrina, some have moved away..but Im so thankful for the ones who ain't leaving this place. Now, my children's feet have touched the ground where their great-grands have walked. There was a moment when almost everybody went inside and I had to sit still and embrace the air, the moment, the silence, the memories and the spirit within them. It was different this year.. but my soul is fed. Sometimes it's the simplicity of maintaining your traditions where the blessings lie.
