gaster<3<gerson is an enlightened take. I’m so curious what your thoughts on the matter art
Thank you I've actually had the idea for a really long time, maybe since like 2018 or something, before Deltarune even. The idea that Gaster and Gerson (ut) used to have beef *in the surface* before the monsters got trapped underground and for some seemingly very stupid reason (disagreement over whether an object is green or yellow, something like that), and then they've hated each other for so long they *forgot why* and so it just turns into an old man friendship where they keep annoying each other for fun. And then Gaster was forgotten about. Does seem like Gerson is missing someone sitting on a rocking chair next to the counter just quipping with him while you shop.
In Deltarune, this is even more nuanced because they have the authorship theme to both of them. Like to me they feel like a fictionalized understanding of Tolkien and CS Lewis, especially the way they interface with religion in their both supposed works. Under the light of kismetic but friendly relationship even the dialogue Gerson gives you about the shadow crystal (which is implied to be something Gaster gives to their holders) after defeating him reads as a cheeky quip: "felt like someone really wanted me to use this thing. But it didn't interest me, so you can take it."
I have a lightner AU (basically a deltarune au where all the dark worlds and darkners are lightners instead and exist in the light world) where in the past before they both died/exploded they used to teach in the local university, but in different departments (History for Gerson and Physics for Gaster), but they'd get into screaming matches and shout at each other across corridors arguing about the prophecy or what it means to be a creator or about writing techniques or whether something is green or yellow. Then when they went home they'd take the bus together and would sit at the KC Diner for dinner together before going to their respective homes. Nobody at the university, faculty or student, knows why they won't simply stop talking to each other, but folks at hometown know that they're friends and that's just how their friendship is.
