The Red Hunter is my first Lisa Unger book recommended to me by Chandra @wherethereadergrows “Claudia is trying to rebuild her life after a brutal assault. She and her daughter moved to a farmhouse she inherited. She plans to renovate it and document it in her growing blog. A family was murdered there. Some still believe there secrets hidden in the old house. And they don’t care who they have to hurt...” Wow 😮 What a story! Normally I listen to an audiobook in the car 🚗 but I kept finding other places to listen (C’mon Nelson - let’s go for another walk 🦮) There are some character tropes you recognize but Unger keeps them from feeling like cliches. Plenty of moments to scream “Watch out!” to characters. You can see and feel the menace of Rhett, the older brother - the obsessive need for revenge of Zoey - the strength of Claudia - the need of Raven. The ending has some unexpected moments - lots of them. And it’s morally gray. It’s not wrapped up in a pretty bow. But it works. Great book if you’re looking for an intense story. You will not guess the final bad guy. Great audiobook performance from Julia Whelan.
