...I was looking for green clothes a couple of days ago and it reminded me of this photo that I meant to put up a month ago. This was my costume as a beat reporter for the Arctic Winter Games: - handmade seal skin hat from Newfoundland (I like telling people that it takes a handsome seal to make a handsome hat). - handmade seal skin bowtie (the cuter the seal, the cuter the bowtie!). - homemade cowboy shirt by a lady from home who helped raise me. - homemade gloves by Not Larry's grandmother. - braided string by Not Larry to keep those gloves in place. - a pair of Levi's (though I am not sure why pants are considered pairs when only wearing one pant-garment) - homemade socks knitted by Not Larry's grandmother. - jacket and lanyard assigned by the Arctic Winter Games committee. - pen and paper found somewhere along the way for story notes. - belt buckle (underneath) from a rodeo star friend. - belt (underneath) from a flea market in Guatemala. - underwear, optional.... . ...Kelly, 17. Salluit, Nunavik, Quebec, Canada. Is this your first time in the Arctic Winter Games? “Yes. I was pretty small when the last try-outs happened. I was 13 and I did not get selected because I was pretty small.” Tell me about life in Nunavik. What are your summers and winters like? “It’s been pretty cold up there. -57°C in the winter. The summers get hot. Maybe not 30°, but they get warm.” How are your groceries and supplies coming in to Salluit? “Every summer, we get ships. And groceries can come through with a plane. The gas ship comes every year in the summer.” What is the main protein source for your diet? “I think caribou.” How old were you when you started hunting? “Ever since I was a kid. I started following my parents and grandfather when I was five or six. Then I started liking it and going caribou hunting on my own when I was about 12. When it is wintertime I had a snowmobile. In the summer I have a canoe. In the summer, I am in the canoe most of the time. I am hunting seals, belugas. I even go caribou hunting with the canoe.” Is the meat shared within the family or is it within the community? “We share it. We have a community freezer for the community too. People go hunting and they fill the community freezer with meat that is free to the people.” What is your favorite thing to eat? “I’d say mattak, beluga whale blubber. The lower skin is soft. The middle part is hard. The top is the fat. We cut them into cubes, so we can eat it just like that. We can freeze it or boil it”... .
