This was an already-made typeset generously shared with me by someone on the Renegade server (@runawaymarbles). I used their beautiful design element for the cover as well (although I cannot recommend doing interlocking elements in different colors if you are visuospatially-impaired like I am!). It was the perfect baby-step into my first actual text bind, whereas up until this one I had only bound blank notebooks or done rebinds of already-printed books. I was worried it might be too over the top with reflective foil used for all four colors (even the top, which photographs looking a little white, is reflective silver foil), but I ended up liking it. It's a nice contrast with the matte gunmetal bookcloth, and echoes the quote that says, "Don't let 'em break your heart. That small one's kinda flashy." (Rosa, my dearest, you were only there for a few pages but you live forever in my heart). This copy was meant for me, but ended up being timed just right (with a little doing-this-instead-of-work on my part) to send to my amazing beta and fandom bestie, @kangofu-cb, so the next copy will be for me! The fic is Do Every Stupid Thing by @thepartyresponsible, a.k.a. the fic that got every single one of us into the Jason Todd fandom. @thepartyresponsible, I sent you an ask, but if you want a bound copy of your fic I would be thrilled to send you one!

First up is Starving for the Light by @thepartyresponsible. I made two binds of this, one for @drgrlfriend and one for me, because we both made art for this fic during the WHOB and I thought she might appreciate a copy :)

The bookcloth for Dr.G's copy is Duo "mudbath" (horrible name for a beautiful cloth) - this is a dual-colored cloth that skews different colors depending on the angle - red, blue, or purple! The endpapers are from Sustain & Heal on Etsy in dark purple, and the cover is done in bronze, light pink, and blue metallic HTV. The flower on the front is a snowdrop, which felt especially fitting, and the butterfly on the back is a nod to Clint's fairytale princess moment.

The bookcloth for my copy is the Japanese Asahi in iridescent violet from Oregon Art Supply, and the endpapers are also from Sustain & Heal on Etsy, this time in light purple! This cloth also has a dual-tone, though it shinier and almost silk-like in texture and the color varigation is much more prominent. I kept my own cover monochrome because the cloth itself is so colorful and bright, so it's all silver foil HTV, and I left the quote off the back because to be quite frank I got tired of trying to keep the dots on the 'i''s!!

The typeset was fun to do! I included both Dr.G's moodboard as a title page, and the two pieces of art that I did for the fic within the book itself (the butterfly art is at the end of chapter 7, and the artwork featuring their hands is at the end of the story). The font for the Title and the chapter titles is called 'Magic Butter' 😂, and the font for the page numbers and headers is called 'Magic Pies', both of which felt hilariously fitting. At the beginning of the chapters I used a watercolor motif and each chapter has a different flower in black and white, except for the Epilogue, which features a full-color poppy (mainly because it's my favorite flower). The title page art is a stock image from Affinity. I used butterflies for body breaks, because obviously I have a thing for the butterflies in the story.

I am once again reminding @thepartyresponsible that if you want a copy of this bind [or any other I have made], just let me know, I am happy to make and send it to you! (Though I'm out of the Asahi book cloth).

Whew! This one was a doozy. Four fics, two volumes—and two copies to boot, since I made a set for the lovely @sammialex.

In the end though, it was worth it, and I'm fucking thrilled with how these turned out, especially the typeset (more on that later) and the dust jackets, which were inspired by Hayley Williams' single art for "True Believer."

I knew I wanted to do a Bucky cover and a Tony cover (since the fics are from Jason's POV), and I scoured social media trying to find the perfect art. Bless @minhyongi for letting me use the piece featuring a young Tony Stark and @adayka for the Bucky Barnes art.

The dusties were fully—and painstakingly—designed on Affinity. The "lockscreen" photo on the back of volume 1 is of a floor drain—a visual cue for torture, and one I couldn't get out of my head thanks to this series. The photo on the back of volume 2 is of a car battery because THEY TAKE TONY.

The theme for this bind was "Tony's metal band t-shirts" but mostly that translated to lots of upside down crosses and the New Rocker title font.

The upside down crosses on the cover are meant to look random, like they're falling form the sky...rain or, better yet, bullet casings.

The endbands nearly killed me, as did hand sanding the top and bottom edges of three out of four books, but—look how pretty!

Endpapers were Crepaldi (I KNOW) but also thank god one of my besties, @maleekamolscreates, is a superstar paper marbler because at the last minute I decided to scrap my original case idea which meant sacrificing one pair of endpapers. Her replacement papers are on the far right.

The typeset is perhaps my favourite I've ever made and the biggest drop caps I've ever attempted.

Trying a new style.

Book No. 6

A bound copy of Give Thanks To Broken Bones, a gorgeous Marvel/DC crossover fic by @thepartyresponsible. This is the fic that convinced me to give DC a chance, for which I am now very grateful. It’s also a favourite fic of one of my favourite people, so this copy is a gift for @bittercape. I will bind myself a copy at some point - I spent too long wrangling with this typeset not to - but probably not until the new year.

I trialled a lot of things for the cover; I had a really specific design in mind, and the final version is not quite right but is closer than I thought I’d get to it. The main thing, of course, was that it be as shiny as I could possibly make it, and it’s not far off.

The cricut did eat the foil slightly (hence the central TO on a wonk), but we are chalking that up to a design choice and moving swiftly on. I’m pleased with the jaggedy edge effect and the rest of the text, anyway. But my favourite design element is the pill-heart detail on the back cover.
