The Dark Truth in the Story of The Friends We Left Behind (Spoiler Warning)
For some of you who don't know this title, The Friends We Left Behind is a horror/thriller game that came out recently. It focuses on a P.I. in 1977 where he investigates the disappearances of children that were asylum patients in 1945. One being four years old!!
Throughout the game, you have to survive five levels as you battle imaginary friends. I've seen the cutscenes, but it does feel like they give you enough time to understand what's REALLY going on. If you notice, some of the kids were aligned with some of their imaginary friends (i.e. twin boys were above Marco and Polo). There was also a kid named Anthony, but there was no mention of him in the records. Then, some of the imaginary friends act like they recognized him almost immediately. Pooky, the ringleader of the imaginary friends, said to the P.I. "I can fix you." Those were the same words Annabelle, Anthony's brother, said to him after getting a lobotomy!
In other words, the imaginary friends that were chasing our hero...were the "missing" children. Here's what I think happened: Annabelle's lobotomy worked...but not in the way the doctors hoped. The removal of a brain piece must have removed a part that prevented her from doing bad things or think what it would do her friends. As a result, she either lobotomized her friends herself or the doctors used her. Anthony must have seen the warning signs and had been the only person to escape the facility. Unfortunately, the imaginary friends soon appeared because their identities were erased and made them a reality to cope with that loss.
As for the staff, they fled or were killed off (there was some blood on the walls). Those that have survived must've labeled them as missing to cover up their failure. Anthony, our P.I., had only come back to serve justice.
