(190) Batanes, 🇵🇭 As those who have been following me for quite some time know (as well as my friends, as well as those who read the bio lol), this IG biz is really just a hobby. I have a full-time job as an actuary for an insurance company, and I spend most of my time, not traveling as some might suspect, but sitting in a cubicle for a 9-5 job. It’s a job that I love and that I depend on for my travels (without it, no salary, and with no salary, no travels, and with no travels, no travel IG!). • This job is not without its challenges. As an actuary, you are expected to take or attend a boatload of exams, modules, assessments, courses, and seminars in order to move forward professionally. There are A LOT. It takes a lot of blood, sweat, and tears before one could finally say they’ve made it at the end of the road. • Yesterday, I got an email inviting me to the very last step of this almost 15-year process. One seminar left before I could finally say this part of my life is over. One more obstacle to hurdle before I could pursue my hobbies more seriously (like taking photos like this one, just putting relevance to the photo here lol). Just one more step. • It’s truly crazy. (184) Batanes, 🇵🇭 Aaaaaaaaaaand I’m back. • Welcome to Batanes, the northernmost province in the Philippines, 162 kms north of the Luzon mainland and 190 kms south of Taiwan (thanks Wikipedia!). It’s a popular local tourist destination, though visits are tempered by the above average prices of flights, accommodation, and food in the island. And locals and tourists alike kinda like it that way. It’s not as crowded as the more accessible island destinations in the country, and therefore less congested and less prone to pollution. • The next few weeks I’ll be showcasing this island that perhaps not everyone in my feed has visited or even heard of. I’m glad to be back in the Philippines (Insta time), and even gladder to promote the islands in my homeland. I just want to address something serious and very dear to me today, and that is mental health. • Over the past few months, I have learned that some of my loved ones, friends, and colleagues have struggled and continue to struggle with anxiety, panic attacks, and bouts of depression. It is a reality that I only recently have been exposed to, and it is heart-wrenching to see people you love succumb to mental distress despite their best efforts to fight it. Never in a million years did I think that it could happen to those I personally know, but times have changed— it could truly happen to anyone. • I just want to say to everyone with this struggle, especially those close and dear to me: I AM HERE. We are here. In your darkest hours, remember that there are people who care for you, who love you, who wish for nothing else but for light to cast out the shadows and the demons in your mind. (170) Porto, 🇵🇹 This scene reminds me of the Pixar movie Coco and the protagonist, Miguel. Portugal isn’t exactly Mexico, but I can imagine the colorful buildings by the Douro River as setting for the afterlife. • One of my frustrations in life is not being able to play any kind of musical instruments. (166) Porto, 🇵🇹 As a predominantly Catholic nation, the Philippines is celebrating Holy Week this week, beginning with Palm Sunday last Sunday and extending until Easter Sunday this Sunday. Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are holidays here, and most spend time with their families, commemorating Jesus Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection. On the other hand, others spend it traveling, given the lengthy break from work. In fact, for the past few years, I’ve used this time to travel abroad for 2 weeks; this year was just a little bit different because Portugal came a month early. • That said, Portugal is also a predominantly Catholic nation, so like I mentioned before, it has its share of churches, monasteries, and cathedrals. For the next few days, I’ll be posting a few of these spaces that are equally mesmerizing in their architecture as they are profound in the representation of the Catholic faith. • Photo above: Capela das Almas (Chapel of Souls)— those iconic blue azulejos (tilework) are even more impressive in person than they are in photos. (140) Barcelona, 🇪🇸 The alleyways of Barcelona: a surprise at every corner, a wonder at every turn. • One lady had a xylophone in front of her, the other a violin. Together, they were playing The Corrs’ Runaway, each melodious note syncing with each other, a cavalcade of sound echoing through the brick walls. There was little time to appreciate applause. After a short moment for a quick bow, they closed their eyes and started again. • A small shop almost vanishing against a wall. If one weren’t too careful, one would miss it. But stepping into it felt like stepping into a magical wonder shop of sorts. Strange and fascinating curios lined up the walls. A little knick-knack here, a little knick-knack there. There were no price tags, only an elderly woman approaching, not to impose, but to wait on one’s request for a quotation. • A group of boys with their skateboards. A magician performing tricks on the unwary. A small stall selling sangrias in mason jars. Two elderly men seated by the sidewalk, idly watching the people pass by. You. Me.
