And itās always so beautiful, the way he sings Geraltās name, but,
āMm, not quite, sweet thing,ā
āŖ one of my favourite excerpts from this fic:
And Jaskierās voice cracks,
As the line goes dead,
And then thereās a surge of ozone,
A feeling like all the airās being sucked out of the room,
And Yennefer emerges from a portal in the middle of his fucking kitchen, hair immaculate despite the late hour, black nightdress looking like an evening gown as it swirls around her, magnificent and shimmering,
āŖalso this, as i am incapable of choosing just one, also from the same fic:
āJust wanted,ā and Jaskierās moving towards Yennefer as Geralt sounds as if heās about to let out his dying breath; āone more moment of you,ā
STG, I cannot make sense of Geralt and Yenneferās story line as lovers. Iām re-watching Bottled Appetites and I cannot fathom at which point Geralt would have decided that he cared about Yennefer enough to make his wish.
Way too much reading into things under the cut:
Like, ok. Geralt is gruff and emotionally constipated but heās clearly acting out of genuine concern for Jaskier, and getting Jaskier back to health is his #1 priority right up until Yen tells him that Jaskier is in a deep, healing sleep. The first conversation in Yenneferās orgy, it LOOKS like theyāre bantering/flirting, but Geralt is rushing things as much as he can without risking offense to the mage he needs to heal his friend. (And by the way, the bitch face he makes when Yennefer saysĀ āJust a friend, I hopeā - shipping goggles or not, he is clearly offended by Yenās dismissiveness).
Itās only once he KNOWS Jaskier is going to be alright and the urgency to save him has passed that he is willing to engage further in Yenās games, and heās approaching her with suspicion the whole time.
The second he has evidence of Yenās ulterior motives when he recognizes the mages seal on the floor, he tries to take Jaskier and leave. Heās only stopped by 1) the risk of Jaskier not healing properly, and 2) Yennefer bewitching him into a fugue rampage against her enemies.
So by the time we get to the jail cell, there has been basically ZERO evidence of Geralt having feelings for Yennefer beyond basic physical attraction (and maaaaybe admiration at her total lack of fucks to give?), and negative evidence for him trusting her. Like, the elf healerās protests that Geralt feels the way he does fall flat. Without some kind of enchantment or magical interference, thereās absolutely no reason for Geralt to feel anything but angry, tricked, and used by Yen at this point.
When he figures out her plan, he realizes that it will kill her, and despite Jaskierās protests it is well within Geraltās characterization to go save a rando from their own arrogant missteps. Just one episode prior, Jaskier even acknowledged this with theĀ ānever get involved with the petty squabbles of men, except that you DO, all the timeā
So then heās in this high stress situation, with Yen yelling at him to make his wish and him offering her the wish if sheāll just stop risking her life, and like...
He could have wished the djinn free?
He could have wished for Yen to survive the ritual?
He could have wished for the djinn to please just go away and leave them alone?
But instead he wishes not to lose her? At this point, fuckinā why? Like, heās known this woman less than a day. In that time sheās tricked him, magically brainwashed him, used his best friend as leverage to harness a dangerous creature, all so that she can gain power? Like, I get that Geraltās attracted to desperation and self-destruction in the women he fucks (Hi, Renfri! Love you, girl!), but COME ON!
The adrenaline sex, I get. Even a level of fondness for each other at having survived something crazy together. But the absolute devotion Geralt shows toward Yennefer in Rare Species is just... where did that come from? Are we just supposed to read it as having happened in the interim? Is Yennefer right that their feelings are just a result of Geraltās impulsive and poorly framed wish?
And, like, I also canāt tell if this is a narrative thing where the romance wasnāt built up convincingly enough for me, or just a character thing where Geralt is a proven DUMBASS who cannot help but instantly fall in love with a dangerous, self-destructive mess of a woman immediately upon meeting her, knowing the whole time that it is leading to heartbreak.Ā
IDK. I like Geralt. I like Yennefer. I dislike their relationship with one another. Iām curious to see what other people think.

@thebardjaskier here are some prompts I may have written a lot š¤¦š»āāļø if you like any I can do more or Chang shit up
The look on Jaskiers face when they said āour babies fertiliser for our grainā in the show, (happy for this to be in either of your amazing universes honestly) Jaskier having nightmares about moments he saw with Geralt. The amazing tales the Bard sung were all well and good, sweet as honey, raw and wild, but each tale was spun (often hiding the more horrific sides) and as such haunted Jaskier just as it did Geralt. Hurt comfort story. Showing how both find it hard to deal with the past and what they have seen together. Losing themselves in one another, sometimes in ways that heal, other times in ways that have their friends (Yen especially) worried. Especially after a particular inscindent that caused both men to haul themselves away from the world and try to rebuild one another.
This could work for a few prompts really. One being the first time they go through an ordeal, how beautifully protective Geralt is, how Jaskier seems just fine with the craziness of it all until he really isnāt. Drowning himself in ale, waking up to Geraltās hands on his chest, teaching him to breathe through a panic attack he didnāt even know he was having. The woman who had been in his room already put the door as Geralt crawled into bed beside his bard, the two falling asleep together. Geralt waking up the next day, watching Jaskier in the golden rays of morning, smoothing his brow, so swept up in this beautiful human he still understood so little about and yet somehow knowing they were already bonded in ways that could never be undone.
Adorable scene involving the two of them ending up sleeping in the woods freezing and waking up nestled against roach. Because dumb sleepy babies waking up to horse snuggles (have been there and itās fuckin cute as hell) would just be SO adorable I canāt. Roach naturally pretending it didnāt happen.
Roach going lame, (I am trained with horses so I know all about this and how it can happen and not be life threatening) just seeing Geralt be super tender and worried and probably totally losing his shit at people about her. She is okay, perhaps she got grazed by a monster or even something on the road. Sheās more than anything she is actually more worried about Geralt, so itās just a cycle. Jaskier wants to help but doesnāt know how and Yen basically has to put an epic calming spell on Geralt just to make him SIT down. Itās all fine and honestly just a blip in the craziness of it all but itās a total moment.
