Over the years, Japanese indie hip-hop upstart Mom has seen his creativity dulled and diluted by what appears to be a major label’s insistence on high output – either that, or he has very little instinct for quality control. Each of Mom’s records since the gloriously fidgety, restless and idiosyncratic 21st Century Cultboi Ride a Sk8board (2020) has featured greater amounts of filler and mundane, one-note padding. On his latest Kanashī dekigoto that’s more the case than ever; Mom can still be exciting and impactful, but nearly all of this is drab and middling.
