I think I drew the design for this costume about a year ago, then just this past weekend I finally got to bring it to life with a beautifully restored Beetle at my side. I can’t thank my collaborators enough for helping me with this project, it couldn’t have happened without you.
The design process was simple, I envisioned Herbie as a youthful and cheeky tomboy, I took elements from 1960’s fashion as well as race car driver uniforms and accessories. I looked at the likes of Twiggy and Audrey Hepburn for inspiration. I knew I needed a round hat to really evoke the shapes of the Volkswagen, and the dress is a simple A-line silhouette, it was best to keep things clean and minimal and let the stripes do all the talking.
The Contagion of Love, or the LOVEBUG
An Actual
Here is an Actual that is the false loving, the love-without-heart, the performative act of loving without meaning that gnaws away at your soul until you are nothing more than a lovelorn shell of beetles and roses, breaking open in an emergence of heartless progeny. It strives to understand the movement, the dharma, of love but may only play at the superficial acts of courtship and intimacy. It is poor at identifying its own and rejects them vehemently on discovery, rapidly moving on to new victims who may feel its bites on their heart and its brood in their blood.Â
Fiery, genuine love draws it like a moth but may also burn it, its hollow bodies vulnerable to catching aflame with emotions it cannot understand; similarly, inoculation against cooties have usually proven effective to prevent infection.
Omu the LoveBug A supernatural being that can't be seen by most mortals. The rare case he is seen my a mortal he becomes obsessive and starts to follow them constantly, slowly draining them of their life the longer they are in his proximity.
He also purposely fucks with people's red strings of fate because he's petty.

Shitty days like this are only a reminder that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. He is my light. My hope. I don’t know what I would do without you. We’ve overcome way more in the past nearly a year than most people (especially at this age) could imagine and boy, am I grateful for you. I can’t wait for you to get home from work today and snug.
