Larch Madness
Over the weekend the fall colors were particularly striking up at Bowman Lake. This time of year the larch trees are shutting down their systems for the winter. Just like other deciduous trees (larch trees are a deciduous conifer), in the fall larch trees move nutrients to other parts of the tree and the sugar making processes of chlorophyll in the leaves (needles) shuts down. As the chlorophyll is broken down, other pigments begin to show. With larch that results in the spectacular display of golden hillsides throughout western Montana. While the weather is still good you might consider coming up to the park for a visit.Β
