#shades of darkness #the intercessor #single play #classic tv #horror tv #1983 #granada #may sinclair #alan plater #peter smith #john duttine #chrissie cotterill #david hargreaves #maggie ford #peter hughes #annette wilkie miller #beverley callard #the only episode of this series I'd previously seen‚ it having been included on a network collection of Alan Plater's work #i remembered thinking highly of it‚ and I'm glad to say that on rewatching (some good few years later) my opinion may only have improved #where the first episode took a muted‚ slightly sorrowful approach to the edwardian ghost story‚ Plater (one of the most humane of our 20th #century tv auteurs) pushes further. this shows in two ways: in the first act he commits more fully (with the cooperation of director Smith)#to the unsettling aspect of the ghost story. imagery here is much more fully in the tv horror mould‚ with some genuinely quite scary moments #in the second act‚ however‚ particularly once Duttine's lead has unravelled the mystery of the apparition‚ the scares give way to an almost #unbearable sadness. a fr cw: this is a sad‚ upsetting play in places‚ and the themes of child neglect‚ loss and guilt are treated head on #and unsparingly. credit too to a brilliant cast of actors doing some very strong work; Hargreaves brings an awful sorrow and shame to his #illuminating scenes with Duttine‚ and Ford's gradual transformation from simple hardness to real vulnerability is gut wrenching. ymmv but #for me this stands out there as one of the most very human and achingly affecting tv ghost stories ever produced #(they're also available on that Tube You know about btw‚ which is where I'm watching; another cw for some brief nudity here)
