Join MNHS in commemorating the SS Edmund Fitzgerald on the 50th anniversary of its sinking in Lake Superior.
Share a moment of reflection as the lighthouse shines for the 29 mariners lost on that fateful day in 1975—and all those who have perished on Lake Superior.
The Annual Memorial Beacon Lighting will take place at Split Rock Lighthouse on November 10, 2025. This reverent annual tradition pays homage to the brave crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald and all those lost within Lake Superior's waters.
The lighthouse will temporarily close for a rendition of the naval hymn, followed by the names of the 29 crew members read aloud to the tolling of a ship’s bell. After the ceremony, the beacon will be lit in their honor, and the lighthouse tower will reopen to visitors until 6 pm.

There was a time that there was nothing I liked more than listening to Thrash Punk, getting high and skateboarding. That time was called “the good old days”. Now I listen to Christian Pop, get Red Bull enemas and waterboard the enemies of my people. These days are called “the days I lie a lot”. But anyway, I think I used to love The Fitz, but my memories of those days are hazy because of all the pot I smoked and all the concussions I got. I also have this feeling that they were called The Fitz, because several members of the band were brothers with the last name Fitzgerald. That could be a lie, though.
