The beginning of the new DCU
DC Showcase: Sgt. Rock Review
Finally got around to seeing this DC Showcase short, featuring Karl Urban as the titular war comic hero going on a mission behind enemy lines with fellow WW2 characters, the Creature Commandos.
I liked this short, not really a whole lot there besides the deliberate contrast between the realistic Saving Private Ryan-ish tone of the solely Rock section with the wacky Hellboy-ish tone of the short once the Commandos show up.
Thought that Karl Urban was a good version of Rock, although he didn’t exactly get a lot to do... Actually... I’d kind of like to see him play him in a live-action film at some point. Maybe in that Black Hawks movie Steven Spielberg was meant to be making?
We do learn that Sgt. Rock apparently takes a very dim view of the whole Operation Paperclip thing, and acts accordingly.
