Also!? Did you notice how half the time when they have sex it’s her giving him a bj and then having to figure out how to finish herself? Like one of the times he even mentions her trying to use his thumb? What, you’re not an active participant in making sure she’s satisfied, too? You poor tortured poet, I can believe she doesn’t love you 🥺🥺 pfft fuck that, justice for Nakota 😤😤
This book pissed me off because ok sure at face value Nakota does seem like a crazy bitch, but can we look at who’s narrating and consider that perhaps the pathetic ambitionless man who is obsessed with her might actually be an unreliable narrator?? In the beginning of the book he describes her in a really ugly way and says nobody besides him could possibly see her as beautiful which I’m sorry but I’ve known abusers who speak about the women they’ve “loved” like that. He ridicules her hobbies, like going to art exhibitions at the incubus or when she starts experimenting with the fun hole (which, sure, is presented as a creepy black hole/potential gateway to hell but can also be looked at as a metaphorical gateway to growth and deeper meaning). He’s afraid of change and he wants to keep her small and with him and the second he can he uses the fun hole as leverage to get her to move in with him, but then he does everything he can to keep her away from it and would literally rather kill her than risk her evolving into something beyond him. I don’t know, I don’t think I’m expressing my thoughts in the best way here, but I don’t think Nicholas is the poor sensitive lover victim and I don’t think Nakota is the cold sociopath the he narrates them as. 🤷♀️
Edit- oh yeah and then he’s like “you made me hurt you :( I didn’t want to but I had to because I love you :( I’m just protecting you :( :( :(“ ummmm fuck you nicholas???
Borrowed The Cipher by Isabella Maldonado from my library today (I went to write but couldn't focus, so I browsed the shelves), and I'm already halfway through. It's been on my tbr for like 2 years, and I was pleased to find it at my local branch, which is rather small. It's fully criminal-minds vibes (BAU, profiling, mind hunters), it's fast-paced, and it's the complete opposite to all the complex fantasy books I've been reading so it's a good break to have between my libby holds.
