The Backpacker
The Backpacker is a novel written by John Harris. It is based on a true life experience and I highly recommend it for every adventurous soul that I know exist in fellow exchange students.
John begins his travels in India with his girlfriend, and as they part ways, he decides to meet a man he met while abroad, Rick, in Thailand. He meets Dave while traveling looking for Rick, and the 3 of them begin their adventure together at Hat Rin beach. They have a beautiful, and free, life here. A year later, they get in trouble with the Thai mafia, forcing them to flee the country. They travel through Malaysia, Singapore, where they steal a boat, and sail the Indo islands. They eventually make their way to Australia and work as fruit pickers, and then to Hong Kong.Β
This book left be surprised at many points, which I'm sure you could easily guess if you decide to read it. The ending is very unexpected and leaves you at a cliffhanger. Having it based on a true story makes it all more exciting.Β
