Kit rode through the forest, on his way to meet with the queen in the place of his father. He was alone for this trip, but he didn’t mind the solitude. It was only about a day’s trip from the border to the palace.
As he rode along, he thought he heard something in the woods nearby, and pulled the reins to make his horse stop. He looked around suspiciously, and called out, “Hello? Is there somebody there?”

Even now that the boys had heard about what’d happened at the Refuge, read articles about Snyder’s trial and heard stories from Crutchy and Ten-Pin and some of the boys who’d been there, it wasn’t something Jack wanted to talk about. No matter how exhausted he was, if he wanted a shower he’d wait until all the boys were out of the bathroom, and only then risk getting undressed.
But tonight it’d taken longer than usual--there was a late show at Medda’s that kept a crowd of boys up late--and Jack was half-asleep as he walked in, not even looking around as he started pulling off layers and hanging them on the hook outside the shower stall. The bathroom was so quiet, he was sure no one else was around.
