Hide slowly opened his eyes, still surrounded by the warmth he had gone to sleep in the night before. The room was dark for the most part as the curtains of the window were closed, although the warm sunlight that peeked around the edges gave some light to the room and indicated to Hide that it was late into the morning.
Hide was evidently the first to wake up. From his spot lying on his side, he was facing Amon, Hide up against his chest and Amonâs arm loosely draped over him. Hide could see Amon still fast asleep from his position, his sleeping expression relaxed and at peace. From behind, Hide could feel Kaneki curled up against his back and his slow and even breathing at the back of Hideâs neck.
It was no wonder they were still sleeping in, since the particular activities they had been doing late the night before had tired them out immensely.
Hide allowed himself some time to savour the feeling of being in-between his boyfriends, warm and comfortable as they all fit together perfectly in the bed. Once he was feeling more awake, he internally debated whether he should stay in bed until the other two woke up, or get up to have breakfast ready. Since it was already late in the morning, and the three of them would probably be staying in bed past midday if nobody got up, Hide decided on the latter option. Â
Hide gently arose from his place on the bed, taking his time so as to not to wake his boyfriends on either side of him. He carefully moved Amonâs arm off him and slowly crawled down the bed, as Kaneki and Amonâs positions prevented him from getting out of the bed from either side. Once he was out of the bed, he fixed up the covers he had moved so that they were over Kaneki and Amon again.
Hideâs first task was putting something on himself. All of their clothes had been tossed onto the bedroom floor without a second thought the previous night, which resulted in some inconvenience now as they were strewn around the room. Hide decided not to bother searching for where his clothes had ended up, especially since Amonâs happened to conveniently be the closest in reach. Not that Hide would ever pass up the opportunity to wear his tall boyfriendâs clothes even if his own had been closer.
Hide picked up Amonâs shirt off the floor and slipped it on. It was one of Amonâs usual white button-up shirts with a collar. It fit Amon pretty nicely, although the same couldnât be said for how it fit on Hide. The bottom of the shirt reached over halfway down his thighs, and the sleeves reached past his hands. As fun as floppy sleeves could be, Hide rolled them up so that they were at his elbows, taking care to do it properly since it was Amonâs shirt after all, even though it didnât really matter since it was already rumpled from being discarded onto the floor anyway. He was buttoning the button that was second from the top when he changed his mind and decided to leave it undone, which exposed more of his chest and revealed more of the marks that had been left on his neck and collarbone from the night before.
Hide glanced back at Kaneki and Amon. Kaneki had moved in closer to Amon in his sleep, searching for the warmth that had disappeared when Hide had left the space next to him. Hide smiled softly to himself at the scene before leaving the room and making his way to the kitchen.
Getting breakfast ready in their home was a simple task, since breakfast technically meant coffees for the three of them. The kitchen was fairly empty, considering Hide was the only one living there who could eat food. The cupboards that werenât empty contained mostly coffee, which Hide took out to prepare. He started on his own first, since he didnât want to make the other ones too early and have them get cold before Amon and Kaneki woke up. Making his own first also gave him an extra go at practising how to get it just right for the other two. Hide knew more about making coffee now than he used to, but he still felt he could get it just that little bit better for his ghoul boyfriends. Â
Hide had just about finished making the three coffees and was about to start drinking his own when he heard Amonâs footsteps approaching the kitchen.
âHideyoshi, do you happen to know what has happened to my-â
Amon stopped when he took sight of Hide, words leaving him. He stood in the entrance to the kitchen, wearing nothing but the underwear that he had put on when he got up. Underwear that Hide noted as being very fitting and leaving little to the imagination.
Hide couldnât help feeling slightly proud of himself as Amonâs eyes stayed fixed on him.
âI took your shirt, sorry. I hope you donât mind,â Hide said, feigning innocence.
It took a few moments before Amonâs brain managed to work enough to get a response out.
âN-no,â he said. âNot at all.â
Hide grinned and placed his cup of coffee to the side of the kitchen bench before hoisting himself up to sit on the bench himself. His legs hung over the edge as he picked up his coffee again to drink.
âI made you coffee too, Amon,â he said, gesturing to the other two cups that were beside him on the bench.
Amon made his way over towards him and took his coffee. Hide leaned forward to kiss him on the cheek, as he was closer to reaching Amonâs height from up on the high kitchen bench.
âGood morning,â he said with a smile.
âGood morning,â Amon responded, returning the kiss to Hideâs forehead.
Amon stood in front of Hide as they sipped on their coffees, Hide letting his legs slightly swing from where they were hanging over the edge of the kitchen bench to bump Amonâs legs. Hide had finished over half of his coffee when he saw someone entering the kitchen behind Amon.
âGood morning, Kaneki!â Hide sung.
Kaneki didnât respond, still drowsy with his eyes half-closed and white hair messy with bed head. He came up behind Amon and wrapped his arms around his waist, nuzzling into his back. Amon looked down the arms wrapped around him. Arms which were hidden by very long, white and floppy sleeves.
âKanekiâŠâ Amon said. âIs that mine?â
Kaneki didnât answer, simply unwinding his arms from Amonâs torso and uncovering his hands from the sleeves before reaching for his coffee. Hide laughed. At least he had the excuse that Amonâs shirt was convenient and within reach for him to take, unlike Kaneki who would have had to go out of his way to open the wardrobe to retrieve some of Amonâs clothing to wear.
Kaneki drank his coffee, not needing to take small sips since his was no longer hot. He leaned against the kitchen bench next to where Hide was sitting, holding the cup between both hands. Meanwhile, Amon couldnât keep his eyes off his two boyfriends next to each other, so distracted that he was barely remembering to drink his coffee. He had been stunned after seeing one of them in his clothes, let alone the both of them. Hide felt especially smug when he caught Amon glancing down at Hideâs legs over the bench, where the long shirt was covering just enough of Hideâs thighs to pose as a tease to Amon.
Hide was the one to finish his coffee first. He set his empty cup to the side and leaned in towards Kaneki.
âGood morning, Kaneki,â Hide repeated.
âGood morning Hide,â Kaneki replied this time now that he had had some time and coffee to wake him up. He turned to meet Hideâs lips in a quick kiss.
Kaneki reached out with one hand towards Amon and gestured for him to come closer, an action which made the sleeve of Amonâs shirt fall forward and flop over Kanekiâs hand again. âGood morning to you too, Amon,â he said, giving him a quick kiss as well once Amon was close enough.
Kaneki finished off his coffee and set the cup on the bench. Hide reached out and placed his hand on Kanekiâs shoulder, letting his hand run down Kanekiâs arm.
âI must say, Kaneki,â remarked Hide, his eyes briefly darting to Amonâs direction and then back to Kaneki. âThat looks very good on you.â He winked.
Kaneki took barely a second before he picked up on Hideâs game. He grinned and turned to better face Hide, placing his hands on Hideâs knees.
âYou look pretty good yourself,â he said, grazing his hands up Hideâs thighs.
Hide ran his hands up Kanekiâs sides. âIf you think I look good in this then you should see the man who owns it.â From over Kanekiâs shoulder, Hide could see Amonâs wide eyes, exactly as Hide hoped heâd react.
âI believe I have.â Kaneki leaned into Hide to speak closer to his ear in a lower voice. âA certain tall, broad and handsome gentleman, yes?â
âYou two thieves are going to be the death of me,â said Amon, gulping down the rest of his coffee. Â

Summary:Â Hide plans an elaborate Christmas Eve surprise for his beloved Ken...
Notes:Â This is dedicated to @ette-letteâ on Tumblr, a sweet girl who loves her memes and adores fluff. I've been writing sooo much angst this past year and this was such a refreshing change of pace. I hope you like it! The link above is for AO3 reading since the formatting works better there, but the rest of the fic can be read below~Â
There were a lot of things that Ken would have preferred doing more than standing out here in the bitter cold. As he stuck his numb fingers into his pockets, he imagined that stack of books lying on his tiny, square coffee table back home. They were all brand-new, thick paperback novels heâd been waiting all semester to crack open and yet even with winter break already well under way, he was here, surrounded by couples on Christmas Eve in Shibuya. He felt more than a few pairs of eyes on him, curious glances and whispered giggles. He lowered his chin into his scarf until it covered the lower half of his face. He wished he could cover his whole body with it and melt away into the dark recesses of the nearest alleyway, but there was no escaping the unwanted attention. He gritted his teeth and pulled out his phone.
âWhere the hell are youâ He tapped the message out and had to redo it over and over, the numbness in his fingertips making him press the wrong letters.
Three circles appeared at the end of the chat log. Ken stared at them, trying to project as much of his irritation as possible through the screen.
âTrain just left Omotesando! Gimme like five minutes, tops.â
âOmotesando?? Hide, Iâve been standing here for FIFTEEN minutes. You were supposed to be here half an hour ago.â
âYou cant see me now, but im doing a dogeza, begging for your forgiveness, Kaneki-san. Forgive me quick, coz people are starinâ
âIf you donât get here in five minutes, I really WILL force you down on your knees.â
Ken huffed and pocketed his phone. There was nothing to do but wait, he supposed. As he looked up to find something to focus on, he regretted putting his phone away. Now he was all too aware again of how odd he looked, standing by the Hachiko exit with no one but the wintry afternoon air to accompany him. He sighed and watched his breath turn to puffs of white smoke that faded into nothing. Oh, how he wanted to just disappear like that.
âHey, handsome.â
Hot breath on his ear made him jump and whirl around. âHide?â he spluttered, one hand on his ear.
Hide grinned, his cheeks and nose red and his breaths coming out in several visible puffs. âHiya,â he said, waving a gloved hand. âSorry Iâm late. I had, um, stuff to take care of.â
âStuff? What kind of stuff?â
âYouâll see,â he said, winking. âAnyway, letâs get moving! Iâm starving.â
And Iâm freezing, Ken wanted to bitingly reply, but somehow, he didnât have it in him to be angry anymore. As usual, Hide was the only person he could count on that calmed him down simply by being there with his cheeky smile.
âSo,â he said lightly, âwhatâs on the agenda?â
âUh, letâs seeâŠâ Hide rubbed his chin thoughtfully. âI was thinkinâ we could grab a bite here and head over to Skytree for the last illumination. Then take a turn around Asakusa for the shrine and maybe some shopping at Takeshita too if you want.â
Ken nodded slowly. It was unusual for Hide to have planned out a date so thoroughly in advance. Usually they just went wherever they wanted to go without being confined to any particular itinerary. Theyâd been going out for more or less four years now, and had sort of just⊠settled into a leisurely pace so, in a way, this was refreshing. Ken suspected there was more to this date plan than met the eye, but all he could do was nod and go along with it because obviously, whatever the twist was, it was supposed to be a surprise. The idea of it made him smile. Hide was terrible at organizing surprises.
âReady to go?â Hide asked him, holding out a hand. It was bare. Ken glanced at his pockets and saw the glove peeking out one of them. He looked back at Hideâs splayed fingers. Then he looked around. Couples moved around them in waves, all absorbed in each other. A few cast him and Hide some strange looks, but he wasnât nervous anymore. He reached for Hideâs hand and their fingers interlocked like muscle memory, slotting perfectly into each otherâs hand without them giving it a second thought.
âOh, geez, your hands are like ice,â Hide said with a rueful look on his face. âYou wanna borrow my gloves?â
âNo, thanks,â Ken said. âThis should be fine.â He placed their hands into Hideâs pocket, never letting go.
âGood thinking,â Hide laughed.
âNot really. Your pocket is way too small.â
âWell, at least itâs warm.â
âAt least.â
They set off down the scramble crossing. Here, in the tumultuous sea of people in love, Ken felt like he had melted into nothing, but in a good way. He hadnât vanished, like he had wanted to earlier, but he was here, and here was Hide, and Hide was⊠Ken felt himself blush. What was he thinking? For some reason, his heart was racing. It was almost like he was a high schooler falling in love all over again.
âFeels like a first date, huh,â Hide remarked as they reached the other side of the street, just in front of Starbucks and Tatsuya, the DVD and CD shop. Ken raised his eyebrows at him but he wasnât surprised. Hide had a knack for figuring him out without needing any words of explanation.
âMaybe,â Ken admitted. âA little bit. Except you didnât plan our first one. That one was a disaster.â
Hide winced. âDonât remind me. Nishiki is still on my case for that. Heâll never get the stain out of his favorite shirt, he tells me. Every day.â
âWhy doesnât he buy a new one then?â
âDunno. Sentimental value?â
âFor a shirt?â
âMaybe it was the one he was wearing when Kimi gave him his first blââ
âOkay, you donât need to say anything else. Iâm good. I get it.â
Hide laughed loudly. âKidding, kidding,â he said.
A little way down Central Street, Hide paused at a staircase leading up to the second floor of a building. The words Shelleyâs Diner OPEN 7AM-10PM and a blue arrow pointing up were plastered on every step, just to make sure nobody missed it. Hide turned to Ken and jerked his thumb in the direction of the staircase.
âI know this place. Itâs pretty good,â he said.
Ken squinted at the signs on the steps. âYouâve been here?â
âYeah, a couple of times when you were too busy to hang out. Nice quiet place.â
âHmm.â Well, it didnât hurt to try something new. âOkay, letâs go,â he said.
They went up the steps and found themselves right at the entrance to the diner. A woman waited outside at a wooden podium and smiled when she saw them.
âWelcome to Shelleyâs!â she said warmly. âTable for two?â
Ken knitted his eyebrows together. She wasnât looking at them strangely. She didnât even spare a glance at their intertwined fingers. That was new.
âYes, for two, please,â Hide said, nodding gratefully.
âRight this way, sirs,â the woman said, bowing slightly and opening the door for them. Once inside, the rush of warmth from the indoor heating system made Ken sigh in relief. Finally. They followed the woman to an empty booth to one side of the diner. There were quite a few people around, mostly couples, but this part of the diner was quieter than the rest.
Once he and Hide were seated and loosening their scarves, the woman produced a laminated menu and placed it on the table between them.
âTonight we are serving a special Christmas Eve course at two thousand yen for couples only,â she said in a voice that was both cheery and hushed at the same time. âWould you like to avail of this course?â
Hide and Ken exchanged glances. This woman really was something else. Not only was she perceptive and tactful enough not to comment or react, but she was also incredibly open-minded. Not many would even acknowledge the two of them as a couple. Most would chalk it up to a prank or a phase of puberty. Not this woman, though.
Ken looked at Hide. âWell that was⊠different.â
âTotally different,â Hide agreed.
That was all they could say about it. They had both been through their fair share of abuse for wanting to date each other. Abuse from their families, abuse from their classmates, abuse from random strangers, abuse from all over the place. At this point, they were used to it, but Ken knew he would never be able to deflect an accusation as easily as Hide could. In any case, he was sure neither of them wanted to think about that right now. It was time to change the subject.
âSo how did you come up with todayâs itinerary?â Ken asked, leaning forward. âHow many pamphlets did you go through? How many magazines and websites?â
âYou say that like I donât plan anything ever.â
âYou really donât.â
â⊠Point taken.â Hide shook his head in defeat. âI read one site. Just one.â
âAnd?â
âAaaand I might have asked around. Just a little bit,â he added hastily.
âAsked around?â Kenâs eyebrows shot up.
âWhat? Itâs not a crime to ask for advice, right?â Hide pouted, crossing his arms.
âIâm kidding, Hide,â Ken said, smiling. âItâs not a crime. I was just curious because you donât do this kind of thing often.â
âYou mean taking you on whatâaccording to my sources and calculationsâwill be the best date ever?â
âI was going to say, âplanning ahead,â but maybe thatâll work too.â
âYouâre gonna regret doubting my date-planning abilities,â Hide said warningly.
âI didnât know there was anything to doubt,â Ken retorted, smothering a laugh.
âUgh, enough with the clapbacks,â Hide groaned. âIâm done.â
Then out of nowhere, a small blue box materialized in front of him. He snapped out of his reverie and saw the woman from earlier smiling at him before heading to another table to serve another customer. He frowned and looked back down at the box on the table before him. Hide was eyeing it curiously too.
âWell, are you gonna open it, Ken, or what?â he prodded.
Ken took the box in his hands. There was a little cream-colored envelope taped to the top of it. He gingerly peeled it off and opened the envelope. In it was a card.
Merry Christmas to my favorite person,
Who puts up with me, though I havenât learned my lesson.
Iâm as happy as ever with you by my side,
I could count on one hand all the times that Iâve cried.
Tonight I wanted to give you a feast worthy of a king,
One so good, itâd make you wanna sing.
After this weâre going to Skytree
For the lights, but to be honest, youâre all I ever see. Â
Ken knew he would be lying to himself if he didnât feel his chest squeeze with emotion as he realized that Hide had written him a poem. He looked up at Hide, who was grinning bashfully. He gestured for Ken to open the box. He pried it open with careful fingers to reveal a chocolate cupcake. Or what resembled a chocolate cupcake.
âRemember back in high school, when we first started going out?â Hide said, his voice a little subdued. âOn Valentinesâ Day, I wasnât able to give you anything I made myself. Every year Iâd screw it up somehow and Toukaâs sick and tired of me making a mess in her kitchen. I know it isnât Valentineâs or anything, but⊠better late than never, right?â
âHideâŠâ Ken didnât know what to say. Heâd been expecting a surprise, but this wasnât at all what he thought heâd imagined. He stood up in his seat and leaned over the table, planting a soft kiss on the corner of Hideâs mouth. He didnât care if anyone looked. He didnât care if anyone stared. âThank you,â he said as sincerely as he could.
Hide blushed and rubbed the back of his neck. âI-Itâs not the last gift, of course,â he stammered. âThereâs way more where that came from.â
âIs that why you were so late today?â Ken asked. âBecause you were making sure everything was in place?â
âKind of,â Hide said, his smile turning furtive. âWell, whatâre you waitinâ for? Itâs not poisoned or anything. Iâve made sure of that.â
Ken raised the cupcake to eye level. It was rather clumsily made, but at least it looked like what it was supposed to be. That was more than he could manage himself when it came to baking. If it took Hide four years to get to this point, Ken wondered how Toukaâs kitchen was holding up. Though he could imagine she would be more pissed off for Yorikoâs sake than her own, since Yoriko used the place way more often.
The cupcake tasted like a cupcake too, which was yet another achievement. Sweet, almost too sweet, with a pillow-y soft center, it was every amateur bakerâs dream. Ken ate it slowly, savoring every bite.
âItâs delicious, Hide,â he said happily, folding the cupcake wrapper neatly and placing it on the table. âYou could start a bakery with that.â
âNow youâre just flattering me,â Hide laughed before glancing at his watch. âOh, hey, itâs about time we got moving. We might miss the illumination.â
They left the diner satisfied and content and set off for Skytree at a leisurely pace with their hands intertwined in Hideâs pocket and the bright lights of Shibuya dulling to background noise. Ken walked close to Hide, shoulder to shoulder, and rested his head against him. This year had been rough, relentless with university deadlines and bouts of writerâs block. More than three-fourths of the time, he was shut up in his room, trying to churn out page after tedious page of either a class essay or a bit piece for a magazine. More than once he had thought to himself that it was about time to quit. Turn off his laptop and just close his eyes and forget it all.
The only reason he couldnât bring himself to stop was Hide. It had been hard enough for both of them to wiggle their way out of their familiesâ vicelike grip. He didnât want Hide to know he was thinking of crumbling under the pressure. But Hide already knew. He just didnât let on, not in words, at least. Very Hide-like.
Walking like this, as though responsibilities didnât exist and as though they didnât need to think of anything else but each other, was already more than Ken could ask for. He could already feel the tension in his body slowly seeping into the chilly night air. He felt Hideâs thumb caress his fingers in a steady little back-and-forth rhythm that put Ken even more at ease.
âI liked that little short story in the newspaper that came out the other day,â Hide said suddenly. âYou donât usually write about romance.â
Ken gaped at him. âHow did you know that was me? I wrote under a pseud and everything.â
Hide looked at him with a matter-of-fact expression. âIâve been reading your work for years, âNeki,â he said. âDonât think you can fool me with a pen name and a new writing style. I could smell your work from a mile away, blindfolded, and with one hand tied behind my back.â
Now Ken couldnât help but laugh a little at that. It made no sense at all, but it was funny. Very Hide-like. It was one of the things he loved most.
The illumination sat right between âbreathtakingâ and âmundaneâ in that perfect middle ground that nobody really had a word for except perhaps âniceâ accompanied by a single impressed nod. At the end of it, a young man wearing a Santa hat with a jingle bell attached to it stepped up to meet them and presented Ken with a neatly wrapped present about the size of one of his paperback novels back home. Another envelope was taped to it. Ken peeled it off and opened it. The new poem read:
I know itâs been a while since you last had time
To breathe freely without a deadline.
You work so hard, and Iâm so proud,
Makes me wanna sing your praises really really loud
I wish I could be
Your one and only sanctuary.
You can run to me, and Iâd hold you tight
In my arms all day and night.
âI suck at poetry,â Hide said just as Ken finished reading the last line. âItâs really not my strong suit. Makes me wonder how you can do like⊠five a month.â
âI donât do that many,â Ken said laughingly. âJust one or two.â
âWell thatâs more I do in a year.â
Ken rolled his eyes and, just as carefully as he had with the first present, opened the second. His jaw dropped. It was a pack of ukiyo-e style bookmarks and⊠Sen Takatsukiâs next and supposedly final novel, set for release at the end of January of next year. And yet here it was, in his hands, a whole month early.
âHideâŠâ he said softly as his eyes traced the kanji of the title. King Bileygr. His heart pounded wildly in his chest and his fingers itched to open it and start devouring every word. âHow did you get this?â
Hide grinned, a conspiratorial glint in his eye. âI have my ways,â he said. âWhy not open it? The surprise gets better.â
Ken looked at him quizzically but then the possibility of what might be inside dawned on him. His eyes widened. âNoâŠâ he whispered. âYou didnâtâŠâ
âOpen it, câmon!â
With clammy fingers, he did. And there it was on the very first pageâSen Takatsukiâs unmistakable handwriting. âFor one of my most avid readers, Ken Kaneki. Thank you for supporting me all these years. Sincerely, Sen Takatsuki. P.S. You have a very lovely friend. Treasure him always.â
He was speechless. This was⊠He didnât even know how to describe it. He couldnât even begin to imagine how much Hide must have gone through to get King Bilegyr one month before release, much less get Sen Takatsuki to sign it himself. But a gift was a gift. He craned his neck and kissed Hideâs lips, lingering a few moments longer than he should have. He heard a few indignant and shocked outbursts from the people around them, but he couldnât care less.
âThank you,â he said, his breath ghosting Hideâs skin. âIâm really, really⊠so happy.â
Hideâs hand found his and squeezed it. âThatâs all I ever want,â he said softly. âIâm happy when you are. And when you arenât, Iâll be here to bear the burden with you.â
Ken felt a familiar ache in his nose. He pressed his lips together. What did he ever do to deserve the man standing before him? This man who, he knew, would give up everything for his happiness. It was unfathomable. He couldnât put his feelings into words. All he could do was step forward and rest his head against Hideâs chest.
I wish I could be your sanctuary, Hideâs poem had read.
âYouâre such an idiot,â Ken said quietly.
âWhat? What was that?â
âNothing.â
âOh⊠Okay.â Hide glanced at his watch again. âShrine time?â
Ken straightened with a smile. âLetâs go.â
Sensoji Temple wasnât crammed full of people, but it definitely wasnât devoid of them.
Most of the visitors were tourists, evident as they wandered the grounds taking pictures, held up maps, or squinted at signs in Japanese. Ken and Hide lined up at the shrine proper, a family of four in front of them and another couple behind them. The girl was particularly chatty. And loud.
âHonestly,â she said, a thick drawl to her syllables, indicating a Kansai accent. âDâyou think this should be allowed in here? The caretakers are seriously losing their touch if they arenât making sure the wrong sort of people donât come in here. I mean⊠itâs a holy place, yâknow?â
Ken felt his body freeze before he even realized it. He wanted to do something, say somethingâanythingâto make the situation even a little bit less painful to endure. But he couldnât do it. His throat was turning dry quick, and his jaw was clenched so tight he could hear his teeth grinding against each other.
âShh, donât make a damn scene, Rika,â the girlâs boyfriend hissed.
âBut, Ryââ
âNo, I donât want to hear it,â he snapped. âWeâre at a temple right now. A holy place, like you said. So maybe you should act like it. I donât want to have to deal with trouble right now.â
The girl huffed. âFine.â
Just as she fell silent, it was Ken and Hideâs turn to pay their respects. They bowed, offered their coins, and said their prayers. Kenâs thoughts, however, were elsewhere, muddied by the Kansai girl named Rika and the words he had dreaded hearing. He was still having trouble putting his temper to rest, and by the time he snapped out of it, Hide had to drag him away from the shrine.
âSorry,â Ken mumbled as they left, rounding a corner to a dark and empty street.
âYouâre not the one who has to apologize,â Hide assured him. âCome on, Iâve got to give you your last gift.â
Ken paused. There was more? The happy, on-cloud-nine excitement he had had earlier had turned sour and he almost wasnât in the mood for any more merrymaking. He looked up at Hide, wanting to say, âI want to go home,â but stopped mid-sentence when he saw the look on Hideâs face.
âIâm really sorry,â Hide said, his expression dark. âThis wasnât how IâŠâ He shook his head. âTonight was going so well that I let my guard down. I didnâtâI shouldâveââ
âNo⊠No, Hide, itâs not your fault.â Ken put a hand on Hideâs arm. He felt awful for not noticing sooner. He hadnât been the only one feeling this way. He never was the only one. He tended to forget that. âLook⊠That girl⊠Letâs just forget about her. Sheâs a bitch and letâs leave it at that. We donât need to let her ruin our night.â He squeezed Hideâs arm reassuringly.
Hide looked at Ken, long and hard. Then glanced away with a heavy sigh. âYouâre right. Sheâs not worth the time.â He took another breath, and exhaled, a long, seemingly endless stream of white smoke rushing out of his lips into the night air. Then he laughed a small, morose laugh.
âThis isnât how I imagined things would go,â he said slowly. âBut⊠Iâm not gonna let myself give up now.â He reached into his jacket and pulled out a little cream-colored envelope. He pressed it into Kenâs palms with a firm determination to his grip and expression that Ken had only seen once before. âRead it,â Hide said.
Ken did.
I think Iâm really nervousâmy hands are kinda shaking,
But I spent all day thinking and thinking.
You mean the world to me, youâre my one and only.
Without you, Iâd be oh-so lonely.
Itâs been more than ten years since I first met you,
Reading a book at school, looking really blue.
Maybe it wasnât obvious, but I was nervous back then.
I was thinking you wouldnât wanna be my friend.
Now, Iâve got something else to tell you.
Every day Iâve been thinking, âIs this what I want to do?â
The answerâfor meâis yes, no doubt.
But the last thing I want is for you to freak out.
Youâre my lover, my best friend, my everything.
For your happiness, I would do anything.
The poem ended there. He lowered the card and saw Hide looking up at him with one knee resting against the cold pavement. In his hands was a velvety, little red box. Ken felt his heart jump to his throat.
âKen Kaneki,â Hide said, his voice clear and strong with conviction. He opened the box and the glint of a ring was enough to make Ken weak in the knees. âWould you like to spend the rest of your life with me?â
The moment was suspended in time. The space between question and answer was like a euphoric high that was impossible to come back down from. Ken leaped forward, tackling Hide into the ground.
âWhâKenâhey! Th-The ring, man!â
They landed, hard, on the ground. Ken hovered over Hide, grinning so widely that his cheeks hurt. They were centimeters apart, near enough for Ken to count every eyelash, to see the flush in Hideâs cheeks.
âThis thing was hella expensive, you know,â Hide sighed, holding up the box. He was trying to look stern, but he couldnât help the nervous look in his eyes. âSo⊠Is this a yes?â
Ken shook his head. âItâs not just a yes,â he said. âI would love to, Hide. Youâre half of me, a part of my soul. Marrying you⊠How could I say no to that?â
Hideâs pensive expression broke into a full grin. He popped open the box and tugged the ring from its confines. He took Ken by the hand and slid the ring onto his finger. Hide held his hand for a long time, marveling at it. Then he sniffled loudly and had to turn away, swiping the back of his hand against his nose. Ken laughed.
âAre you⊠crying?â
âShuddupâŠâ Hide whined, pressing both palms to his eyes. âI just⊠Iâve been waiting for this day⊠Dreaming about it, thinking about what Iâd say⊠how Iâd say it⊠And then Iâd worry myself in circles about what youâd say⊠What Iâd do if you said noâŠâ He lowered his hands suddenly, looking panicked. âI mean! I wouldnât take it against you if you didnât want to! Iâd completely understand. Iââ
Ken leaned forward and kissed him. Heâd been doing this an awful lot tonight, he knew, but he couldnât help it. His gift was still all wrapped up back home, after all. Peppering Hide with kisses was the least he could do. For now. Still, there was more he had to say.
âAbout a while ago,â he said, sitting back on his heels. âWith that girl. I⊠Iâd be lying if I said that I didnât get angry. Or hurt. But I want you to know that no matter how many times anyone tries to tear meâor usâdown, I will never, ever think differently of you and of us. You mean everything to me. If I lost youâŠâ He bit the inside of his lip. He didnât even want to imagine it. Not for a split second. Hide reached out, his fingersâcold from the chillâtouching Kenâs cheek.
âItâs okay,â he said with as cheery a smile as he could muster. âShe pissed me off too, but⊠Well, what can we do?â He paused, laughing. âHey! That kind of rhymed! I think Iâm getting the hang of this poetry stuff.â
Ken smiled. âPoetry isnât all about rhymes.â
âItâs a step up, though, you have to admit. But anyway⊠Like you said, no matter how much people might try to get at us⊠to make us feel different or whatever⊠I donât care. Maybe I canât change their minds. Maybe I never will. But thatâs not something I set out to do in the first place. Iâm here because I want to live, and live the way I want to. And that means I wanna spend every bit of my life with you. It doesnât matter to me what they think about that.â
Change. Hide was talking about change. And he was right. Maybe it was impossible to change everyoneâs mind with a single snap of their fingers. Even if they said the sappiest things out here, it wouldnât make a difference. The best they could do was live and love and simply⊠do what theyâve always wanted to do.
âMore than a really good hamburger steak?â Hide teased.
âMore than that.â
âEven with omelet rice on the side?â
âYouâre making it kind of hard for me to choose.â
âReally?â
âNo! Iâm just kidding.â
They laughed. Nothing boisterous like a guffaw, but quiet, affectionate laughter. The sort that settled softly in oneâs heart and filled it with a warm glow.
Ken slid his arms around Hide, and he knew he was no longer outside in the middle of the street in Asakusa on Christmas Eve. He was warm, safe, and happier than heâd ever been. He wasnât cold. Not anymore. He remembered the feeling, but it was a years-old memory.
