“For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.”
Perhaps this is why so many redemption arcs end in death. It’s a testament to their change of heart. Maybe this is why so many heroes must die at the end of their quests, a testament to the good they have done in the world. Or maybe the answer to both these common trends in literature is that you a dead man cannot fall from grace. A dead hero becomes a god in the eyes of those left behind, for he is no longer alive to make any mistakes. They died for the good of everyone else, so we loathe to point out their faults now they are gone. If you die, if that is your great sacrifice, in the course of undoing all the harm you have done, no one can say you are just waiting to stab them in the back. You don’t have to answer the question of whether they deserve to be punished and what is the proper punishment. It’s just easier to create martyrs, testators to their own goodness.
