In Angband, Maedhros had learned a great deal about testing the limits of one’s bonds. Physical, or otherwise – manacles that could be slipped, if one did not mind dislocating a joint or two; commands that could be either defied, or followed with dumb literalism, wilfully taken to the wrong ends.
He had been punished, but also, sometimes, rewarded. If he amused. If he could sneak disobedience through, in the crack between word and meaning, between his chains and the mountain wall.
“Please,” he said, begging, as he had not, upon Thangorodrim, not until Fingon came. “Please, I don’t want to do this – “
The Havens of Sirion had no cliffs, were wet mud and tangled reeds. Blood puddled, thin tendrils infiltrating through the silt, wavering on the surface of the river.
A woman of his own people spat at him, as she died, before the light still gleaming in her eyes went out. It wrenched at him, reminding him.
This swear we all –
It was an oath to wriggle through, to break and crack and evade. Fëanáro’s kin, he thought, and was she not their kin, through her husband, of Turgon’s line – death will we deal him, but she was no him, she was neither Maia nor Elda nor Aftercomer –
“Elwing!” he called, fighting through the rough dwellings rising from the marshes, at the edge of the sea. There were guards, soldiers, but the fearful remnants of the hidden kingdoms, of Doriath and Gondolin, were little match for the Fëanorian veterans. Some had been only children when they fled.
“Elwing, listen to me! We don’t want to do this!”
There were still children, even now, their screams high and thin amid the clash of battle and the smoke coming up from the reeds.
“Please,” he called, following the light, cutting through a guard’s chest with a single sword-blow, the blade grating on a rib as he tugged it back, to catch and parry with the backswing, another trying to come up at his side. He surged forward, momentum carrying him to crush the man’s face with the edge of his shield, in a crunch of blood and splintering bone.
The Oath caught at his limbs, when he would have stood, and let the blows land, and led him on: thinking, all this could stop, if she just gave us the Silmaril, I wouldn’t have to –
One thing Maedhros had never learned was surrender. He went on, and watched the light fading into the sea; then turned back, to his brothers, and the dead.
terrifying tolkien week, day 3: sic transit gloria mundi - turgon and the fall of gondolin
Terrifying Tolkien Week, day #1: all shall fade
When Elwing begins suffering the first of the birthing pangs, Eärendil is confident that he is prepared. He has long been regaled with tales concerning the peculiarities of childbirth among the Elves – midwives and neighbors and councilors and random denizens of Sirion simply coming up to their beloved Mariner in the streets, all eager to inaugurate a Man into their mysteries.
So he knows to expect that Elwing will have some premonition of the children to come – twins, she says. Boys. Intertwined even now, nestled within her.
He even knows to expect the screams.
It is because they are twins, he is told – rare, among the Elves.
And ill-fated, though none say this to him.
(ill-fated, he hears them whisper all the same)
(all shall fade)
Day 3: Sic transit gloria mundi
“Then perforce Morgoth surrendered to her the gems that he bore with him, one by one and grudgingly; and she devoured them, and their beauty perished from the world. Huger and darker yet grew Ungoliant, bu her lust was unsated. `With one hand thou givest,´ she said;`with the left only. Open thy right hand.´ (Of the flight of the Noldor; The Silmarillion; J.R.R.Tolkien)
How easily the tale could have ended then and there, in the desolate wastes of northern Beleriand, with Ungoliant devouring not only the treasures of Formenos but also the Silmarils and mayhap Morgoth himself...

Blood is Thicker Than Water
Terrifying Tolkien Week - day 6
Warning: blood and gore, torture, some self harm, general nopeness
Gold and jewels and fine silk and finer hair dripped from a figure as if from an open wound. His cloak spilled out onto the floor, the deepest red a person could see, just like the pools of blood that surrounded it, some rotted into dark slime. He was busy with his dark deeds.
Crack.
The unmistakable sound of breaking bones and muffled distress echoed into the round chamber lit by a ferocious fire. Pained sobs around binding silks shook from a naked man upon the cold, marble floor. Gentle shushing then issued, as if from nursemaid, and the other figure, tall and beautiful, dropped his club for a vial of pulsing liquid. It was not any kind of medicine.
terrifying tolkien (stars hide your fires)
They were like twin bolts of flame, beautiful and deadly and effervescent in their thoughts and manners. Once, they'd been gentle and sweet and quiet, living comfortably in the confines of their home, sharing their childhoods with the whisper of summer breezes and the laughter of the stars above.
But that was a long time ago. They were now wraiths in all but name, thin and haggard and hungry. They were shells of the elf-lords they'd once been, and their enemies burned before them.
(For their arrows were fletched with flames and their swords sheathed in stars)
Stars, hide your fires
Terrifying Tolkien Week, Day 2 @terrifyingtolkien
It appears under starlight: a shade just out of the corner of his eye, a shade no-one else sees, or else they say naught; Maeglin would be grateful if they did, but dares not ask.
(Stars, hide your fires.)
The shade has familiar shapes of superiority and disdain, and Maeglin, though ever the Child of Twilight, retreats into the deepest shadows to escape its sight.
He suspects it follows him unseen, but somehow that is easier to bear; or so he thinks, until the deepest Shadow reaches for him.
(Stars, hide your fires.)
At the end of that road, his shade greets him with a cruel smile.
