Teogonia really surprised me, and really broke a lot of fantasy anime tropes.

I would call it "pseudo Isekai", the protagonist Kai sometimes has dreams of a past life but these dreams only help him to consider the possibility of magic and refine its use in a couple of instances with otherworld knowledge from his dreams.

The setting is technologically equivalent to the early iron age with some "demi-humans" more Neolithic.

In this world all people have an organ called a god-stone and when they are killed in battle the victors will remove the enemies god-stone and drink its nectar to increase their spiritual power.

In this world there are monuments representing Land Gods, and a person of that land can become a Guardian Bearer (avatar of the Land God)... And so people war for control of the Land God monuments. The Land Gods are also directly responsible for the fertility of the land, and the piety of the people is responsible for the power of the Land God.

Humans feel that they're unjustly under attack by demi-humans and that demi-humans are naturally blood thirsty, but they are encroaching on human lands because they are being forced out of their own lands and not out of choice.

That's not even getting into where Teogonia touches on sexism, classism, war trauma and reconciliation.

Very good, definitely recommend
