Warframe: The New War (Part 3)
so yeah, time for my thoughts on the finale of The New War quest. SPOILERS ABOUND, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
So last I left off, Vale (my drifter) had successfully comandeered a ship from the dockyards of Venus, and had managed to make their way down into the depths to make a very dodgy pact with the Sentient Hunhow.
First things first, upgrading from the pistol to the magic bow was pretty cool, even if it was yet another reminder that I am a terrible shot. Either way, I readied up and prepared to head out and hunt the archons...
And was instead met with a flashback with young Evey. Seeing them in class with other kids in their operator uniform was really weird, especially as it kind of recontextualises their whole vibe, and really brings home how young they were when they went through whatever they went through. It's also interesting to see the use of lost tech, especially seeing the cephalons being used as teaching aids.
The first Archon I went after was the Owl. I figured it would be a better idea to get the Owl out of the way first, as I assumed it would be a massive pain to actually hit the thing; As I already mentioned I'm not a good shot, and hoo boy, was I right to do so. That fight took forever, I kept missing, and I did go down once (thank you Stalker for coming to the rescue lol). I got there eventually tho!
Anyway, this seems like a good time to talk about the shade living on the grounded orbiter. For a little while I thought the strange green spirit was the Operator, caught somewhere in the void. It wasn't until I saw the flower-like object that I realised it was, in fact, The Lotus. Speaking of the Operator, seeing the next flashback of Evey's time stuck in the void was interesting. I realise this is all pre-written, but the way Evey went around looking after the other kids, helping them keep up hope was very much in line with how I'd seen their character. It was also incredibly creepy, hearing the noises coming from the other side of the barricaded door, as everyone else on the ship went mad or died. It makes it just that more sucky that the surviving kids were turned into child soldiers due to their unique void mutations. Also, what is up with the black-eyed doppelganger!?
Anyway, it was time for another Archon hunt, this time the Wolf. He was much easier than the Owl, and went down a lot quicker, though admittedly I did get lucky a few times, managing to catch him through the doubles (most likely by missing my actual target lol). Anyway, I fed the next stone to the Lotus, who promptly goes nuts and tries to kill us. Shoulda seen that one coming, Vale!
Anyway, the Lotus eventually gets catches up to Vale and has her on the ropes, which is when we get the last flashback of Evey's time in the void. Grasping hands with their black-eyed doppleganger, we see all the other variations of Evey throughout the multiverse fall and disappear, ending with just Evey and Vale left standing, clasping hands. This did make me wonder if Evey's powers and survival were some kind of closed paradox loop, that they sort of got them through interacting with another version of themselves, but there's no time to ponder that. Vale accesses Evey's powers for a brief moment, and fights off the mad Lotus. The Lotus disappears off to go kill Ballas (despite still being a few sandwiches short of a picnic) and... Evey is left standing there!?!?! Time for another flashback!
This was a bit of a doozy. Seeing the full flashback to the derelict ship that Evey was trapped on, wandering around the halls, chasing a shadow... it was all really creepy, in the best way. It was also something of an illustration as to how much technology had changed for the peoples of Warframe over the centuries. Although the Corpus still have massive ships, they're mostly all borderline office buildings, in a weird way. The ship that Evey was on felt more like a city (or maybe a bunker from fallout). Anyway, it's very quickly apparent that the shadow we are chasing is Vale, and when we finally catch up, Vale explains their deal. They are the version of Evey who was never rescued.
They never developed their void powers, never met the Lotus, never piloted a warframe. They spent their life trapped on a broken ship, stuck in the void. They then offer Evey a choice - Ballas needs to be stopped, and the Lotus needs to be rescued - but who will get to carry on from this point and finish the mission?
I gotta be honest, at this point I actually stopped playing for a day just out of sheer shock. Genuinely didn't know what to do. Over the last few missions I've grown really attached to Vale, in terms of their look they are much closer to how I initially imagined Evey. That being said, I like a bittersweet story, and I feel like A) Vale would want Evey to keep going, and B) it felt right that Evey should be the one to bring Lotus home. So I picked Evey.
With that being decided, it was time for Evey to get back in the saddle and bring our Lotus back! Gods, it was such a relief to be back in a warframe after all this time, and being Titania, it made flying through the Sentient's battleship so satisfying, watching my little butterflies taking out all the bad guys! Admittedly, having to jump back into the Railjack and the Nechramech was kind of annoying, but seeing Erra attempt to make up for his mistakes was satisfying.
Anyway, I managed to blitz through the Murex pretty quickly - taking down the Snake Archon was really satisfying. I'd specifically saved her for last; Like I said in my last post, my first warframe was Mag, and it felt really right for Evey to release Mag from this infection within the Murex as the penultimate battle - and I don't know how it works within the actual lore of the game, but it definitely felt like Evey in particular was freeing the warframes from the control of Ballas and the Sentients.
Speaking of Ballas, after reaching the top of the tower it was time to take down Ballas. I've gotta be honest, I was a bit wobbly to start with lol! It took me a bit to realise I was supposed to be using the beam to smash the mirrors that were around the room, but I got there in the end. Anyway, the battle isn't really the important bit.
Seeing Evey clamp a veil down on Ballas and giving him a taste of his own medicine was so satisfying, not to mention in a poetic way it felt like Vale was helping beat him too (veil, Vale, get it?). Needless to say I was cheering as Lo/Na/Gulis(?) sucked the sucker dry and tossed him off to the side. Naturally, Warframe only knows how to escalate, and we had a giant Angel Wall Daddy pop up from another dimension at the last minute. I can't recall if this guy has been teased at all, but I do remember that one mission into the void where we picked up a strange transmission that woke something up. At first I assumed the thing we woke up was Hunhow, but maybe it was whatever this thing was. Also, that other dark eyed version of Evey popped up! I had thought that was Vale speaking to Evey from across dimensions, but apparently not!? At any rate, the Angel Wall Daddy disappears and we get to take Lotus home. I was pleasantly surprised to see Vale and Evey switching between eachother. I had originally assumed that, due to Vale's sacrifice, we wouldn't be seeing them again, but I really like this co-habitation. As such, it's become my headcannon that, at the last minute, Evey reached back through the void and brought Vale with them.
Finally, there's the last decision of the quest. Which version of the Lo/Na/Gulis would be coming with us. I realise this probably isn't much of a surprise, but I ended up choosing The Lotus. Her Natah personality felt like it had long been left behind, and as she was never really Margulis, picking that option felt like choosing a false personality. The Lotus, on the other hand... As much as it was also part of the brainwashing, it was under The Lotus personality that she ended up rebelling against the Orokin, and truly becoming a mother to the Operators, so it felt like that was the best choice.
And there it is! The end of the New War quest! I have since done the Duviri Spiral and Jade Shadows quests, and I might jot down my thoughts on them in a future post, but TBH neither of them quite reached the dizzying highs and lows of the New War. Going forward, I have mostly used the Vale persona when playing as the Operator / Drifter, but I'd like to think Vale's cynicism has been somewhat softened by Evey's positive outlook, and likewise Vale protects Evey from some of the worst stuff that they have to experience.
Laters ;)
