hey! i see that you're a english lit major! I'm actually a lit major aspirant; ie i will be choosing english literature next year. What is your course like? What is it like actually doing close analysis etc? And dealing with texts that you may not like too much? (I really like contemporary/modern literature but we have 6 english lit subjects for a major) and the dreaded question: what avenues exist for a lit major? I want to do a postgrad in genre-writing for media... would that help?
honestly i think my course is pretty chill because i enjoy what i am studying (and that should be why we choose our majors!!!) we cover a lot of content in a semester per module (an average of 1 book a week or so) so its a lot to prepare for during finals and sometimes, we dont have much opportunity to analysis in depth because of time restraints. for me, it is really up to myself to read into the texts deeper and find time on my own to close read a lot of parts that arent covered in class. i suggest getting a group of friends to study and close read with you because more insights = more in-depth analysis!
ah dealing with texts that you dont particularly enjoy can be troublesome. i’m doing a mod that deals with v old eras of literature like medieval literature (3000 lines of old poetry for beowulf,,,,) and it can be tiring. tbh, sometimes i dont really fully read all my texts but i do ensure that i at least know the gist of the text. it helps to make fun of the characters you dont like and complain about them too; even shallow comments can help you get a headstart into more in-depth analysis
oof i get asked this question a lot as well: so what are you planning to do after getting a degree in lit? i came from a comms background so i guess i can always go back into comms and do marketing or social media stuff. what i can say is: dont worry. i can tell you that stereotypical viable paths are: teacher, academic... etc. but im sure you know about those already. what i like to focus on regarding my future career is the type of work environment i want to work in. i intend to attempt to work in a publishing company in the future so that is usually what i tell people! I believe that if you really want to do a post-grad in media you should go ahead and do it! dont be confine by your major, soft skills are as impt too!
i understand that a going into a new phase of your life is daunting but also v exciting. if you want someone to talk too about, i’ll be here! i hope this helps!
