Project 1: Convections of Engineering Drawing - Hand Tools
The aim of this project 1 was to construct an engineering drawing of a workshop hand tool using the Australian Standards AS1100 as the guidance. The object should be a simple, common hand tool which is not electrical such as a hammer, a screwdriver, or a measuring tape. The drawing must be a full-size scale 1:1 ratio which must be shown at least three views of the object and at least one of the following:
+ CROSS SECTION VIEW + ENLARGED DETAILS VIEW + AUXILIARY VIEW
Moreover, the drawing must also show the dimensions of the overall size of the object and includes the following components:
+ THE TITLE BLOCK + THE THIRD ANGLE PROJECTION + THE DECLARATION STATEMENT + THE GRIDS
Reflection
I chose a VERNIER CALIPER as my object. Throughout halfway of the project, I realized that I broke the brief where my object has an electrical part on it. Although, I went back to my tutors and double check with them again and they told that it’s fine for me to use it. They advised me to use labels to label the electronic part as well as for several parts that I think it is necessary. Within my drawing, I drew three views along with an enlarged detail view. The three views are TOP, FRONT, and LEFT.
This is my working on PROJECT 1:
Difficulty: There are several difficulties that I encountered while drawing the vernier caliper. The first difficulty is getting the measurement from the object. I used big and small rulers to measured the object and I actually found it hard. By using my eyes, I knew that the measurement is going to be inaccurate in some parts. There is no any other choice for to measure the object beside do it manually by eyes, therefore I tried my best to get it as accurate as I can. The second difficulty is the drawing in general. Obviously, I drew the top view first and it was easy but as I projected to draw the next view, which is the front view, I found it difficult because for some parts on the object, especially the small components such as bolts and buttons are very hard to draw with the right measurement. I’ve redrawn the front view for a couple of times until I got it in my fifth trials. Last, but not least, the third difficulty is when drawing the enlarged detail view. I found it difficult to get the right ratio scale. I went through the samples in the tech drawing textbook and I actually figured out how to draw the enlarged detail view correctly.
Error: I noticed that I’ve drawn some of the components slightly not at the right place if I were to compare with the real object. This happened because of my eyes measurement skill.
Resolve: To resolve this error, I just need to redraw the object until I get every component in the right spot and to do this, time management is very important because I need to leave myself an extra time if I need to redraw the object again.
Overall in this tutorial, I found this project hard and easy at the same time. I also found it fun as well. I’ve noticed that this project has developed and improved my tech drawing skills and I’m looking forward to drawing more object later on.
