Black Tea, Green Tea, White Tea, and Oolong Tea come from one of two tea plants: Camellia sinensis sinensis, and Camellia sinensis assamica. What makes each specific tea depends on the different forms of processing and different levels to oxidation.
More oxidized than green, white, or oolong teas. Contains caffeine. Will become bitter if steeped for too long.
Colors: Red, Black, Orange
Properties:Courage, energy, stability, fighting addictions, money spells, luck in studies/school.
Less oxidation than black tea, smoother.
Color: White, Green, Pink
Properties: Health/healing, longevity, sex/love/passion spells, energy spells, cleansing/banishing negativity, money spells, good luck spells, progress
Uncured and unoxidized, low levels of caffeine, pale/yellow color
Properties: clarity/wisdom, cleansing, healing, fertility, protection, youth/beauty, new beginnings, blessings, serenity, friendship
Produced by withering leaves under strong sun and oxidation. Falls between green and black teas in terms of oxidation.
Properties: Love, strength, balance, reflection/wisdom, friendship, protection
Not made from either of the “tea plants” Camellia sinensis sinensis or Camellia sinensis assamica. Rooibos is a South African tea created from the “red bush”, which is what rooibos translates to (which makes it technically an herbal tea). Other names are Bush Tea, Red Tea, and Red Bush Tea. As expected, the tea is reddish in color. It’s described as sweet and slightly nutty. Unlike black tea, it doesn’t become bitter if steeped for too long.
Properties: rejuvenation, resiliency (especially towards emotional troubles), inner peace, dream work, energy, grounding
Made from a species of holly native to south america (Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil). It’s a shrub/small growing tree, which also makes this technically an herbal tea, and it is VERY high in caffeine.
Properties: alertness, focus, productivity, social energy/luck in socializing, morale/confidence
These are any teas created from fresh or dried flowers, stems, leaves, roots, seeds, or dehydrated fruit. It is usually left to steep longer than the other teas, and many call them herbal infusions. Herbal and fruit trees don’t go through the complicated processing that teas from the "tea plant" do, herbal teas are simply dried out.
Examples are teas we hear going around on witchy tumblr a lot, like chamomile tea, lemonbalm tea, lavender tea, dandelion root, giner, elderberry, hibiscus, etc.
All of the properties/correspondences depend on the specific herbs used.
Although coffee is made from the seed in the cherry of a coffee plant, it is not a type of herbal tea. This is because coffee beans (the seeds) go through a very complicated process of fermenting, drying, storing, milling, roasting, grinding, and brewing in order to make coffee. Although it’s not a tea, I will include it as I like to use it in my practice.
