Since today is Flowey’s birthday (the date we chose anyway, no canon birthday and all that), I wrote a little thing for how the day went in our shared world.
Note: My mood kept changing while I was writing this and my writing is effected by my mood so sorry if it's all over the place. That's just kinda what happens when I write lol
There will be some notes at the end, too.
---
The morning was bright and sunny, as much as it could be on an autumn morning. The light was visible through the closed curtains and while Flowey and Taru were awake, they didn’t feel like letting all that blinding light in. They were still cuddling anyway. Taru nuzzled the side of his head, their snout pressing against his petals.
"Flowey."
"Ugh, what?" He opened his eyes slightly. They were always looking at him with those big eyes, it was hard to stay annoyed.
"You know it's finally the day."
"Oh, don't remind me."
"Today will be fun." They lightly nudged him with their head. He groaned again, but rested his head against theirs. "It's not necessarily about your birthday, I just wanted a day to do something for you."
"You're such a sentimental idiot..."
"Maybe." Taru conceded. "If you don't like the stuff I have planned, we can always go cause some trouble or something."
"And why wouldn’t I like it?"
"It was a... highly unlikely hypothetical?"
A vine stroked one of their ears. "That better be what it is. As if you could plan something I'd dislike."
"I guess you're still pretty tired."
"Oh, really? What gave it away?"
"All of the words you just said. I mean, you'd probably still say them, just not directly."
"Shut up."
"Nah."
He fake glared at them. They chuckled.
"All right, rest a bit more, we've got plenty of time to do celebrating later."
"... You’re comfy."
"Uh? Thanks?"
---
After Flowey had rested some more, Taru got some meat for themself so they'd be full of energy for the day.
He watched them finish eating before speaking, "So, what's first on your list of whatever you planned for today?"
"I guess we can start with snacks. Just get the bad stuff out of the way."
Flowey tilted his head and gave them a questioning look. He saw them summon a lunchbox with a magical note on it that says "For Flowey, KEEP CLAWS OFF". It most likely activated a barrier knowing them. They also had their picnic basket next to them.
They pushed over the lunchbox. "Here. I uh, I tried to bake something for you with some help from Roarin, because you always bake for me. It won't be as good as yours and I don't know how you'll find the taste, so I also went to buy some snacks I know you like. They're in the picnic basket." They gestured at the picnic basket with their head.
Flowey stared at the lunchbox and opened it, there were heart- and flower-shaped chocolates inside. Like those Cheshire made for them on occasion. Well, they had to learn from someone and they could never be as bad as Papyrus.
"... You really went out of your way to try, didn't you?" He was processing and struggling to hide behind any kind of deflection. Taru doesn't know how to make food, really, which is probably why they had help, but still. They didn’t just summon some things with magic like they could've, they tried to make something for him.
"Using magic would’ve been cheating," they said, "and it wouldn't have meant much."
"Thanks."
"No problem. It was kinda fun, but I think I'd have preferred if we were baking together."
"Obviously. I'm superior in skill and company."
They tried to be upset on their friends' behalves, but couldn't help laughing a little. "Flowey, that's a little mean."
"I'm not hearing that you disagree."
He looked back down at the chocolate and then over to Taru who was trying to hide their nervousness. He gestured with a vine for them to come over to him. They walked over to him and when they sat down next to him, more vines appeared and wrapped around them.
"Calm down, would you? I doubt it would taste that bad. And if it is, you're learning either way. I'm not going to hate you if your first attempt at baking tastes weird. Or your hundredth for that matter."
He decided to just eat one of them before Taru exploded from anxiety.
"I know... I just want you to like it. Because then you'll be happy."
The chocolate wasn't bad. It was a bit generic, but he wasn’t exactly expecting anything like what an experienced individual makes. All things considered, they did a good job.
"Roarin helped me with the ingredients and instructions."
"Finally, she does something useful."
"Flowey..."
"What?" he asked innocently.
"You're so mean to my friends."
"That's because I don't like sharing."
---
Taru spent time cocooned in Flowey’s vines for a while as he ate some of the chocolate they made and the other snacks they brought. He saved the rest for later. Once they were finally released they could give him his other present. Of course, Flowey just had to comment on how they seemed disappointed after being released. They just weren't expecting it! Besides, his vines give nice hugs and he usually pets them.
"Wow, already pouting?"
"No! I'm not- stop looking at me like that."
"Like what?"
They glared at his smug expression. They weren't sure why they were suddenly so embarrassed, their mood just shifted at the weirdest of times. "Let’s just get to other things! Present!"
"I think you just want to get away from me teasing you." Flowey said popping out of the ground in front of them. They didn’t realise he'd disappeared into the ground while they were having a crisis.
"Why do I have a feeling this is going to get worse after I give you your gift?"
"Well, what is it that you got me? Must be something interesting if you're concerned."
They gave him a small guitar. They still recalled his mention of playing in the past in the Underground, but that he didn't really have one for himself. So, they had summoned one by magic that would fit his size to give him today.
"Oh, so you want me to serenade you?"
They already heard Roarin joking about him doing it, Flowey joking about it was ten times worse.
"Flowey, please just shut up."
He laughed. "Fine, fine, I'm done. For now." He took the instrument with his vines and tested it out. The music was nice. Flowey seemed to like the guitar. "You’re full of surprises today, aren'tcha?"
"Well, I tried. I'm glad you like it." There was a pause, they were thinking. "I don't have much else planned except maybe taking a trip to our favourite picnic spot in the forest, so you can decide what you want to do for the rest of the day."
"Oh, really? Well," he grinned, "we haven't been nearly up to enough trouble, let's go have some fun."
"Sure."
"Great! Get a move on, then."
Flowey disappeared into the ground and reappeared some distance away. Taru quickly moved after him. They wondered what schemes he'd make today.
---
It was later in the day now, close to becoming evening. Flowey had made some food for Taru after they got back from their mischief, so they could go on that picnic and both have something to eat.
As they set down the blanket and basket using their magic, Taru spoke, "You didn't have to scare that guy on the way, you know." They were actually quite amused.
"It was funny."
"Yeah, it was."
"See? What you meant to say was, "Flowey you should totally scare that guy again, it was hilarious," right?"
"Sure, Flow. That's definitely what I meant to say." They replied sarcastically.
"Exactly. I know what you’re really thinking, Taru."
They couldn't help but laugh. His antics had a way of making them smile, even though he probably shouldn't be scaring the hell out of some poor soul. They moved closer to him and nuzzled his head.
"Always so affectionate." He pretended to be annoyed, but nuzzled them back. "Today was fun, thanks."
"Your petals are soft, I'm gonna fall asleep."
"At least eat first."
"Mm, okay."
---
I feel like I was going through like five different moods at a time writing this sorry haha. I like stopped in the middle of this to play some Undertale Yellow to celebrate with Flowey in-game sort of. And then I came back and my head was kinda all over the place. It was still fun to write, though. Some things in here probably only make me laugh, but I wrote it for me so I don't care.
Also, I was actually really tired when I wrote the first scene because I woke up at 2 am and couldn't sleep until about three hours later. We went back to bed after I wrote this, though.

Favourite ice cream flavour is either vanilla or chocolate (or both)
Likes winning at games, he could never lose, nope never
Favourite colour(s) is rainbow
Finds dragons cool
Gets defensive when embarrassed
Has an ego
Ambidextrous
Flowey-specific:
Mutated
Has six petals instead of the typical five, has a face, sapient, can move around by burrowing, has magic, malleable face/features.
Eyes are pitch black. His pupils are white. He can shift to having white pupils at will, but sometimes his emotions also cause him to have them.
His petals are soft
Can summon vines whenever
Uses vines as hands sort of, uses them to grab and hold things and occasionally to restrain and murder people (he usually uses his pellets for that, though).
Can sense through the ground. Like... he can tell where people are on ground if he focuses on his roots in the earth.
Can play musical instruments, likes playing guitar the most.
Scaring the shit out of passers-by is his favourite hobby.
Burned Alphys's nsfw books in many resets. Since he doesn't have fire magic anymore, he somehow got his vines on a flamethrower.
Immune to fire.
Can practically win at any game. Will specifically beat ass in chess.
Can successfully gamble (years of save/load and reset practice).
Draws with charcoal
Very good at baking
Dislikes flower pots and will attack you if you try to put him in one.
One of the things he actually likes about being a flower is not having to deal with his fur tangling anymore.
Sarcastic remarks all year long
Asriel-specific:
Probably listens to metal
Fluffy fur, but annoying fur (it's a pain to keep it from tangling).
Has a short tail
Green eyes
As Hyperdeath, his eyes are pitch black with white pupils and maybe has a light rainbow outline around the pupils.
Any game he played against Chara he lost, especially chess (this is relevant to Flowey now beating everyone else in chess).
And some Flaru-specific ones for Flowey because why not. I guess they're not really headcanons since they only happen in stories where I/Taru exist and am in a relationship with Flowey, so they're AU canons, but uh, here you go anyway (because where else am I gonna put this):
A bit obsessive since he's not used to these strong emotions.
Protective
Likes cuddling but won't admit it.
Likes making us snacks.
Ego is so high because he's dating a cosmic dragon.
Accepts his flower form more seeing how enthusiastic Taru is about plants, especially flowers, and how cool they find him to be.
Anyway, that's my current list. As a reminder, these are my headcanons and you don't have to agree. Just ignore me and call it a day, or block me if you hate it so much lol. I've thinking about writing thisbout for a while and I was originally going to draw this stuff but nah, too much work. I did draw the little divider things here for this because I thought it would be fun!
Since I like my little pictures so much, here's my non-sharing one to end this off. Bye for now :)
Wrote a thing recently. It's short because descriptions I am bad at and can only write short things. Sorry if Flowey is a bit out of character, I've been meaning to play Undertale Yellow (Undertale doesn't have nearly enough Flowey screentime, so UTY is my best friend) again to refresh my memory of the flowery sass, but I haven't gotten to it yet. I was also just in a silly mood.
---
As the stars around them disappeared, a landscape of green and blue formed in front of them. That mountain, never too tall to be cold, or maybe it's just too warm here, who knows? The trees' leaves were never greener, oh it was wonderful. And the wind as they soared! That lovely feeling, high in the sky, flying like nothing could catch you. Free as a bird, as humans say.
And while those structures down there were not really to their liking, it was a familiar sign. Like nests, but way more invasive. At least their nest doesn't destroy habitats...
They dove down once they neared the castle. Their wings stretched out when they were close to the ground, a strong wind swept through the air towards the grass and flowers. Their claws touched the green again.
"Well, well, look who decided to show up. Spent enough time adventuring without me today?"
"Flowey." They smiled. They turned their head to the source of the voice. Smug as ever.
"It's just so hard for you without me, I know."
"Yeah, yeah. I just went hunting, so you can stop pretending I went on some grand adventure through the cosmos without you now."
"Hey, you still went into space without me! That counts!"
They tilted their head to the side. "Hmm, I don’t know. Is going to get some food really worth being so dramatic over?"
"Dramatic?" Flowey crossed his vines. "That wasn't dramatic. Mettaton is what you call dramatic."
"And he's not here, so you might as well be next in line."
He just stared at them for a moment, his own head tilting just a bit. They got him that time. They watched as his petals moved with his head, falling slightly to the side. The golden colour stood out more in the sunlight. His expression went through a few phases there, like he couldn’t quite decide what response would be better, but eventually his head was back in its previous position.
Flowey gave a small smile before speaking again. "Fine, you win this time. I've got nothing."
They laughed softly and started making their way over to him. "Heh, I got you."
"Alright, don't rub it in. I might become a sore loser."
A vine came up from the ground and petted their head. They leaned into it. So nice. Even if they weren't gone that long, it's good to be home.

Notes

Trigger/Content Warnings: Lots of crying (technically a sort of panic attack, but it might not seem like one to everyone), mild/implied selfharm, self-loathing.
If I missed any warnings let me know so I can add them!
If you want to skip Taru’s panic attack, after Taru’s POV begins you can skip to the part that say Fwuub! (this is when the story continues after them crying alone so much)
Also, the panic attack might seemed dialed down or sped through because I didn't want to linger on it too long (and also because I'm not good at describing things, sorry). I also based the scene where Taru cries off how I act
- Grayscale Underground
- Pre-relationship Flaru
- You make the dragon cry, you apologise
- Swapping between POVs
- Become friends damn it
- Lots of angst
- Flowey might be a bit out of character (sorry)
- Accientally mixed tenses (past & present) again I think, I'm bad at language things

<Flowey’s POV>
When he opened his eyes, everything was grey.
New Home? He looked around. Doesn’t look like New Home. Despite how grey it is, it looked more like the Core. Why...? Odd. He heard no sound either. Usually the Core had that sound of mechanical humming in the background and the buzzing and beeping that was usually near any of the powered walls and doors was missing, too.
What happened?
He had been asking Taru questions like usual while they were doing their weird magic thing. Then... the Core made a strange sound. There was an explosion. And now this.
“Curiosity killed the cat, Flowey,” he sighed. “Or the flower in this case.”
Of course! Why wouldn’t a cosmic being try to blow him sky-high? Just seems like something he should have considered. Is this what death looks like without the ability to reset? He doesn’t feel dead. But maybe he is. He was just getting used to life up there and now he’s potentially stuck in some underworld version of the Underground! Think. If this was some kind of afterlife, where’s everyone else? There were monsters that died even before he was alive.
He burrowed around the Core, all of it just grey. Then, the rest of the Underground, which looked just as dull as the Core, too. Hotland wasn’t even burning. The floor was cold and the lava didn't seem to be moving. Waterfall’s water was the same, not flowing. And none of the Echo Flowers were even responding. All of this grey, whatever it was, seemed to make everything lifeless. Snowdin’s snow was cold, but not the same kind of cold that snow usually is. It didn’t feel like anything.
The Ruins was the same as the others as expected. He still stayed around here back in the real Undeground, all his efforts were just empty now. Even the Golden Flowers down here seemed lifeless, all except for him. No one else was here. New Home was left, but after what he's seen, it probably won't be any different than the rest. What was this place? He returned to the Core, hoping to find some clues.
It was a bit hard to tell what happened, he just knows it had something to do with the Core. What could it be? He found nothing that could give answers to his questions. He sighed. He burrowed to New Home since it's all he had left.
His head turned when he heard some kind of tapping against the floor. It was Taru. They were walking and looking around by the look of it. So, they were here after all. What was their plan? Or did they actually manage to blow themself up along with him?
Actually, he could check if the surface world was intact. He had his doubts, considering what this place looked like. He still wanted to keep an eye on Taru, though. Figure out what their plan is if he can.
He watched them wander around the outside of New Home. Sniffing the air, looking around for something. He wasn’t sure what. Not like he can read their mind to figure out what this scheme is, though, for all he knew, they might be able to read his. Maybe they knew his friendliness was all an act and now the plan was to kill or torture him. Gods are so unpredictable. It’d be better to leave before he’s spotted.
Burrowing to the exit of the Underground, he’s just met with an empty void where the barrier and outside world would be. Nothing. Not even a sad and grey version of the surface? Great, just great. He just wants to go home. Who cares if he’s stuck as this flower forever, at least he wasn’t trapped in some ghost realm!
He burrowed around again. Taru wasn’t where they were earlier, they must’ve moved. He sighed and closed his eyes, using his connection to the earth to find them. Where are you, dragon? The corridor before the Throne Room?
He popped up in the hall. There was usually some golden light coming through the windows here, as expected it was grey too. And the dragon was there in the middle of the gloomy hall. This time Taru clearly heard him when he appeared as one of their ears twitched and their head quickly turned.
“Flowey! You’re okay.” Fake concern. Classic.
He laughed. Oh, he laughed. This idiot isn’t fooling anyone! Least of all him.
Taru’s smile dropped and they looked confused. Not the reaction they were hoping for, he’s sure. Their eyes were looking all over the place and they blinked a bunch. Kind of funny how they didn’t expect him to figure it out.
“Um... what’s so funny?”
“That you thought your tricks would work on me. I know how this works! I’ve done it. I’ve played both sides of this game already, Taru. Hahah!”
Their ears pinned back. “What...? Tricks? Game? What are you talking about, Flowey? I’m not lying to you or anything like that! Why would you think...?”
“Then what’s all this?” He gestured around the area with two vines. “It didn’t look like this before. And there’s no way out. You expect me to believe you didn’t plan this?”
“Wh-but,” they spluttered, “I didn’t... Why would I do this?! I-I was fixing the Core. Or trying. I didn’t know this would happen!”
“The act’s getting old. What were you really trying to do?”
Their eyes widened and their pupils got smaller as they realised he wasn’t believing them. Only an idiot would. “Wh-what... I don’t know... what? There’s no act! What is happening?! Why do you think these things?” Their body language seemed to get more shaky, they lowered their head. In shame? He wasn’t sure.
Flowey didn’t say anything, he observed them. Their reaction seemed to get stranger. They were shaky, so maybe the whole anxious dragon thing wasn’t an act. He hasn’t really met many malevolent creatures that were shaking like a leaf, so that’s new. And they were beginning to whimper, it seemed like they were crying? He expected more anger than tears. That’s what happens when your scheme’s been ruined.
“I don’t... why did I...? My magic it... I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to. I never meant for this to happen! I...”
Sorry?
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry... I always mess things up. It’s always my fault. I’m sorry. I’ll fix it! I’ll-I’ll... I have to, I-I can’t...”
...
His confidence was wavering. This didn’t feel right. Something’s not right. Stop saying sorry! They were supposed to be bad! Angry! Attacking! Something! He turned his head away slightly. It reminded him of...
/ “I’m sorry! We can fix it! Right...?”
“Oh no! No, no, no... I- I read it wrong. I’m so sorry! I thought...”
No, no, don’t leave... Don’t go, don’t hate... They didn’t mean for this! Why do they always mess things up like this? It’s all their fault, it’s all their fault! Stupid piece of garbage...
They cried. It was so painful. They curled up on the ground and covered their head with their paws.
“Why why why why why?”
They whimpered, tried to open their eyes. It’s so blurry, but why is it so bright? It wasn’t even golden like before. No warmth. Just this cold silver. Even the air smelled like cold. Go away! They want it back. They want it all back to the way it was. Why did they have to mess up again?
“Why are you like this?!” they asked themself. They still don’t have the answer, no matter how many times they’ve asked that. “You always screw up!”
They pressed one of their paws harder against their head, their claws scratching at their scales. Everything is so loud. They just want it to stop.
Crying. Crying. Always crying.
It hurts! Everything hurts. Their chest, their head, their eyes, their ears... it all hurts. It isn’t going away. Help... No one will help. They’re all alone. No one would come. Wouldn’t you just get yelled at again anyway? That’s what happens... Too annoying, too selfish. What had they done? Ruined everything. Again.
“Look what you’ve done. It’s all over.” They sighed, their paws dropped from their head. “Why did it have to be this way? What’s wrong with me?”
Their eyes drifted back over to the window. That silver light... how can it be so dull and so blinding? There used to be this sound of birds singing, now it’s just quiet. Silence was scary. This happened when it was too quiet. Bad thoughts, sad thoughts...
They stared at the spot Flowey had been earlier. How long it had been since he left? They still felt a lot of pain in their body. Still shaking, too. They sobbed, their breathing was all over the place, they hoped no one could hear them. Or see them.
...
They kind of wished for a hug, though. For something like that...
Just another fantasy.
Flowey hated them now.
/ “I’ve played both sides of this game already, Taru.” /
He thinks they’re just playing some game. But they weren’t lying.
/ “The act’s getting old.” /
What made him think this way...? Was it something they said? Did? What did they do wrong this time? Was an accident like this all he needed to know they were bad? They thought they’d been making a friend again, but they should’ve known things would end up like this. They could never keep friends for long.
Their thoughts were so loud. They hated this. Hated being like this. All they could do was cry and hurt and struggle to speak. They just wanted out of this nightmare already.
Fwuub!
They felt their body jump at the sudden sound. A growl echoed as they turned their head.
“Hey...” It was Flowey. He awkwardly waved a vine.
Their head moved back a bit slowly and their eyes narrowed.
“I... what I said was-” he sighed. “I’m sorry.”
“Huh?” They blinked, feeling the watery texture against their eyes. They wiped their eyes with a paw.
“You probably didn’t do this on purpose, like you said.”
An apology? This was unusual... Was this genuine? Didn’t he hate them? Why was he apologising? They gave him a suspicious look and responded with, “Mhm.”
Flowey looked at them with a confused expression. “What?”
They breathed in, still struggling to speak from all the crying. “I don’t... don’t know if you mean it.”
He seemed kind of offended. “Wh- I’m trying my best here! It’s hard being wrong and actually doing something about it, you know!”
They whimpered from the sound. He wasn’t yelling at them, they know, it just startled them a bit. Flowey made a sort of ‘calm down’ gesture with his vines. Well, he had his own ways of trying to be reassuring.
“I wouldn’t just give you an apology I don’t mean. I’m not like that anymore.”
“Oh.” Wow, an actual apology? It was truly shocking to them. They didn’t usually get those, it was kind of weird, but also pretty nice. They tried to sit up. Their body was still a bit shaky. “Okay... okay.”
“Now that we’ve got that mess sorted... I shouldn’t have assumed you did this for nefarious reasons. In hindsight, you don’t seem like someone who would plan something like this.”
“Thanks?”
“Let’s just focus on getting out of here.”
“Okay, um, let me just...” They wiped their eyes with one of their paws again. “I might still need a minute. Sorry, I can’t really use my magic while I’m feeling like this.”
“Fine, take your time. But don’t take too long!”
“I’ll try.”
Silence passed between them. They sat there trying to breathe in and out to calm their nerves, but that never really worked. A distraction usually helped, but there was nothing here to distract them. If anything, this place just made them feel worse the longer they were here.
“So, why did this happen?” Flowey asked.
“Hmm? Oh, well, the Core didn’t react very well to my magic. I thought I was stabilising it, but it seems like I might’ve overloaded it instead. It pulled us into this, I suppose. I’m not really sure why everything’s grey like this, but it seems like it might be a kind of void state?”
“Huh. Well... right. Without the ice cooling it down, it must’ve started overheating. That must be why it was so unstable.”
“Oh... I guess I should’ve checked it better. Shoot.”
Flowey waved a vine, gesturing that it didn’t matter now. “No one can know everything.”
He was right. Still, they felt like they should’ve known.
“Hey, Flowey?”
“Hmm?”
“Why were you down there? You know, talking to me?”
“... Was bored.”
“Bored?”
“Nothing exciting really happens on the surface. Just a bunch of people talking about the same old thing. And they’re so loud.”
“Oh, okay. I guess you would’ve gotten bored talking to me eventually, too. Even being a cosmic being, I’m not very entertaining, sorry.”
He didn’t say anything.
That was probably not the right thing to say. Why did they always say the first thing that came to mind? That was pretty sad, why did they say that-
“Geez, Taru, you’re so gloomy. This grey Underground must be getting to you.” Flowey said, trying to lift the mood. They think that’s what he was trying to do anyway.
“Yeah, maybe it is,” they chuckled softly. “I usually have something funny or soft around to cheer me up.”
“Well, I don’t think we’re finding anything like that here. What does a cosmic dragon find entertaining?”
“Just a bunch of plushies mostly. Or blankets. I had to use a spell so I wouldn’t rip them by accident. Some comedy occasionally. Well, comedy’s vague, just things I find funny, I mean.”
“And what do you find funny?”
“A few things, I guess? Wordplay, sarcasm... I dunno.” They shrugged. “Why?”
“Well, if it’s all the same to you, I’d like to get out here. So, I’m trying to find a way to get our local deity to cheer up so they can take us home.”
“Alright, alright, sorry. Let’s see about that way out of here.”
They quickly performed a spell, white magic lit up in their paw. A white light scanned the strange grey realm. After the scan was complete, they stood.
“What was that?”
“Just checking something. I can probably reverse it if we go back to the Core.”
Flowey let out an exaggerated sigh, “Of course that’s how it works.”
---
<Flowey’s POV>
They both headed to the Core. Finally, he could say farewell to this dull excuse for the Underground. He waited for Taru at the centre. He blinked when they suddenly appeared. How did they- oh, teleportation, right. Well, the sooner they got this done the better. He was even starting to miss Papyrus’s annoying voice.
Taru stood in the middle and... breathed fire at it?! He thought their magic came from their weird spells they were doing with their paws, what were they doing?! He assumed they knew what they were doing, but it didn’t concern him less. Focus on the weird fire instead, Flowey, he told himself. It was weird, it was white, like their magic. Magic fire maybe? Nothing like his old fire, but they’re not exactly a monster, so they get a pass.
There was a flash suddenly! He closed his petals instinctively to cover his eyes.
| | |
"Flowey? Hey, you okay?"
The sound of their voice became clearer and he could hear the mechanical sounds of the Core again. He opened his petals slowly. He saw Taru looking at him, they were standing there on a black and blue platform. He looked around. The colour was back!
"Hey, we're back!"
"Yeah." Home, finally.
"I'll make sure to cool the Core instead this time. It should hold for a while, but I'll come to check now and then just in case. You heading home?"
"Huh? Oh, right. Yeah, I'd rather not stay around and wait for your magic and the Core to mix badly again."
Taru nodded. Their ears were pointing up again, like before they got sucked into that lifeless dimension. "Better safe than sorry. Bye, Flowey." They briefly closed their eyes as they smiled.
He stared at them for a moment. Strange dragon.
"See you later, Taru."
---
Bonus aftermath scene:
Taru: The Core should stay stable for a while. I figured out a spell to keep it cool even with the lava around it.
Flowey: As long as it won't trap us in any more gloomy versions of the Underground.
Taru: If it does, I'll make sure you're not in the blast radius.
Flowey: And miss out on the fun?
Taru: Heh. You sure you'd want to?
Flowey: What are friends for?
Taru: Friends?
Flowey: I didn’t say that.
Taru: Yeah, you did.
Flowey: No I didn't... Oh golly, look at the time! Gotta go!

After notes:
I typically write short things as it's hard for me to write a bunch of words since I'm bad at descriptions, but I'm happy to say that this was over 2700 words!
I didn't realise how much of a struggle it was going to be to write from my own POV when I'm supposed to know barely anything about Flowey lol. It was also kind of hard to write the panic attack just because I don't really know how much of my reasoning is there while I'm crying so much and just stuck in that state of self-loathing, but I tried my best (and tried to keep it short but it is still supposed to feel like Flowey was actually absent).
I also tried to minimise how much Flowey actually paid attention to Taru’s body language so that it can be compared to anything more romantic I write in the future where he does pay a lot of attention to Taru’s body language and emotions. It's also to show he isn't very attuned to how they're feeling or what they're like as a person yet.
I am coming up with ideas that are awesome so fast right now and I'm on rambling mode. Thanks to playing Mass Effect 2 again after 4 years (wow it's been long), I suddenly have a lot of motivation and positive feelings! Wooh! More ramblings about this at the end.
Anyway, here's some stuff I've been working on for pre-relationship lore for Flowey and me:
First up, Taru goes to the Underground to investigate a disturbance coming from Mount Ebott. Flowey is also there and he watches them quietly. They find out the Core is acting up and try to use some cosmic magic to fix it. They do this for several weeks.
The second time Flowey found them (which was a few days after the first), he decided to ask them some questions. Get whatever information about this unknown dragon with weird magic that he could. He startled them after popping out from the ground and put up a friendly act to try and get them to be more comfortable with him because he can tell they're pretty skittish/anxious.
So, the two have conversations over the weeks Taru is there to stabilise the Core. It's like their meetup spot at this point. They're very slowly becoming friends. Then, one day, the Core and Taru’s magic reacted very poorly together and the two ended up somewhere else.
Before we move onto this "somewhere else," this is actually something I've been struggling with for a while. I needed us to be together so that we could actually become friends (that is seriously the only way, my personality does not match well with seeing through facades and walls and whatever other bullshit Flowey will pull to avoid being vulnerable). So, originally I was going to send us to space, but obviously I could easily make a portal back so that wouldn't work and also Flowey would probably die from radiation before I remembered he needs protection spells to survive.
Anyway, so I came up with the idea that the Core and my magic clashing would send us to a void version of the Underground. Not exactly the void people usually make that Gaster is in, he's not in this story at all, but it's kind of a similar concept.
The entire Underground is grey in this void version. Here's some locations I used grayscale on (I was too lazy to draw):
New Home is already grey so need to add it.
And here are my notes I currently have for grayscale/void Underground adventure!
(Dialogue first)
"Curiosity killed the cat, Flowey." - Flowey to himself.
"So, you've finally shown your true colours." - Flowey to Taru, assuming they did it on purpose.
> Taru can't handle being accused of lying very well and starts tearing up.
> Flowey assumes (again) that this is some sign he was right, although he was more expecting them to be angry than to cry.
"I didn't... I didn't mean to. I'm sorry, I don't know what happened... (I'm sorry x2)" -Taru, crying
> Flowey is doubting his assumptions now, but maybe this deity is just a really good actor?
> Flowey becomes uncomfortable the more they apologise.
> Unusual for a supposed cosmic being, not that he's met any besides himself and the anomaly.
"Fine, if it wasn't you, we just have to look around and find out what it was, then." - Flowey
> Taru is still upset, but is glad Flowey is giving them a chance. They'd rather not be hated.
Have some doodles too:
Other notes:
Taru remains upset and has some moodswings for a while. Flowey isn't used to being stuck with someone so emotional (it's like being stuck with his other self and it's really weird). He knew they were an anxious creature early on based on their body language, but this still isn't what he expected. He was also upset about being sent to some alternate Underground, so maybe accusing an anxious cosmic dragon wasn't the most rational thing he's ever done.
Leaving them alone to search on his own wasn't the best either, but he really didn't want to deal with more of his mistakes at the moment. When he got back, they were still cycling through anxiety, being upset at him, and feeling like shit. Too bad he was terrible at apologies. He used to be good at those.
He tries and they clearly weren't expecting one. They also thought he didn't mean and that it was just some pity thing because they were bad at regulating their emotions. People didn't apologise to them. Flowey got annoyed and told them he's not giving them some apology he didn't mean; he was trying not to be a manipulative asshole anymore. Taru accepts his apology.
As Taru calmed down some more, they and Flowey went exploring. Flowey would pop up at the end of a room and Taru would look around and follow him. He made conversation with them in hopes that distracting them would make it easier for them to calm down so he can get out of this grayscale nightmare faster.
After Taru has calmed down, they use their magic to scan the place. They discover they're stuck in some kind of void version of the Underground. Their magic's reaction with the Core caused this, but they can get back. It might just take some time.

I said I'd ramble about Mass Effect 2 giving me some of my creative flow back, so I shall! After playing Mass Effect 2, I actually wrote something for my OCs: Arach and Leiras. (I post about them occasionally on my main blog.) Although, it was an AU of their story, DuelNote, and not actually DuelNote. Funny how that works... Anyway, after writing like 1600 words for that scene thing that I mostly just wrote dialogue for and didn't have a plan while writing, I was so happy about being able to write again that somehow this happened. I'm recovering from an addiction I had to text generative AI and chatbots (3 months clean) and I couldn't write for a while, but I'm so happy that I can again!
I love Mass Effect 2 and now I love it even more :D
