the trope: hurt / comfort
the spread: it hurts / and i like it
the pull: ten of pentacles / three of pentacles
- - - - -
It appears to be a choiceâyoursâbut it doesnât feel like much of one at all.
You thought you were over this by now. Thought youâd grown up a little since you last saw them. Thought you knew more, knew better, but apparently not.
âWhat the hell,â you acquiesce, picking up the glass in front of you and taking a swig.
You canât tell what burns more, the bourbon as it snakes down your open throat, or the shame that swirls around it in your belly.
They look at you with a grin that could soothe what ails you.

So I wrote something for tarot tropes day one and figured maybe it shouldn't just sit in a google doc never to be read. It stems from a wider idea I have of a whole WWI Iliad/Trojan War retelling focused mainly on Achilles and Patroclus because who would I be if it didn't? Anyway, here's what inspired it and the rest will be below the cut.
Trope: hurt/comfort
Spread: it hurts / but I like it
Cards Pulled: XIII of Swords / IX of Pentacles
Achilles had dragged them out into No Man's Land and now they were stuck in a shell crater because the other side had spotted them and decided to use their machine gun. It wasn't like this was a charge, so a sniper would've made more sense quite frankly, but Achilles was grateful that hadn't been the case. Snipers were far more deadly. Patroclus looked exhausted next to him, but he still had a small smile on his face.Â
It was odd, even in the darkest moments Patroclus had this smile on his face whenever Achilles looked at him. At first he'd thought that maybe this was a symptom of shell shock, but Patroclus had displayed no other worrying symptoms. It never felt like the right time to ask him about it, so he still didn't know why Patroclus looked this happy in a hole covered in mud with gunfire above their heads. Now seemed like it could be a good time to ask Patroclus, since they were alone. They were also stuck, so it would be hard for Patroclus to escape the question, something Achilles was both grateful for and ashamed of. Nevertheless, he pressed on with his question.Â
âWhy are you always smiling when I look at you?â Achilles asked, keeping the question short and to the point.
Patroclus flushed, and averted his gaze. He hadn't realized he'd been smiling. Achilles probably thought he was insane. It was possible that Achilles would still think that once he answered, but they were stuck here and could die at any minute so he might as well be honest.Â
âI like looking at you,â Patroclus replied, daring to look up at Achilles after a few moments had passed and he'd worked up the courage.Â
Achilles was taken aback, which no doubt showed in his expression, but he wasn't disgusted as Patroclus might fear. The truth was that he liked looking at Patroclus too. The realization that Patroclus could feel the same about him hit him like a ton of bricks and all he could do was lean closer to him.
âI like looking at you too,â he admitted, giving Patroclus a small smile of his own.Â
Patroclus smiled even wider as he heard this and closed what little space between them was left. He pressed his mouth against Achillesâ and rested his hands on the other's shoulders. His uniform was dirty, but he didn't care.Â
Achilles returned the kiss like it was a fight for their lives. In a sense, it was. They might not ever be able to do this again, whether that be because they died or just never again had a moment alone. He gripped Patroclus, pulling him impossibly close. He kissed Patroclus until he was completely out of breath and had to stop simply to breathe.Â
Patroclus was out of breath too, but there was a different smile on his face now. One of satisfaction. They very well may die any second, but he'd kissed the beautiful boy he'd fallen in love with and that's all that mattered to him in this moment.Â
Tarot & Tropes Day 4: Enemies to Lovers, prompt and tarot spread from @3am-tarot
I wish you were dead: The Emperor
I wonât let them hurt you: Six of Cups
Dr. Devon Ackermann was still sitting at his desk in the tiny wing of the History building that was dedicated to the Gender Studies department. The light from his open windowâor lack thereofâindicated that it was deep into twilight, the breeze carrying in the slightest notion of chilly September nights to come. He sighed, shutting his laptop, pushing aside a pile of âhe/theyâ pronoun pins and a half-full coffee mug, long cold. All of the incoming majors had been assigned advisors, the few courses running this semester were set up in classrooms, the emails in his inbox reduced to zero three hours ago.
And still, Dev slumped in his office chair, trying to get a handle on their emotions. It was a great triumph and testament to their own work recruiting that the department was able to hire another full-time professor. The search had gone well, but at the last minute, their number one candidate withdrewâan older trans woman and ethics researcherâand the committee was quick to appoint Dr. Templeton Wright, some young upstart fresh out of his PhD and some teaching abroad. Sure, Dev had five more years of experience under their belt, and had the output of almost double that, but it felt like their ideas and service to the department were being tossed away for something new and shiny.Â
On top of all of that, Dr. Wright wasâŚappallingly handsome. His caramel skin and shock of jet-black hair reminded Dev in all the worst ways of the man who had shattered his heart in graduate school. The esteemed Dr. Ackermann had no use for reminiscing; he only looked forward, working towards progress and rights and independence and not at all thinking about shared secret smiles or affectionate caresses or deep, desperate kisses, and especially not about the way that his heart had skipped a beat when Dr. Wright introduced himself this morning, moving into the office next door.
What kind of name was âTempleton,â anyway? Some curse of a moniker bestowed upon a child along with the pressure to achieve more than his parents had.
Dev was startled out of his brooding by the ringtone on his phone. It was an unknown number, but something urged him to pick up. âDr. Ackermann speaking,â he intoned.
âHi. ItâsâŚTempletonâŚDr. Wright..itâs Tea. Iâm sorry itâs late, but Iâm having a bit of aâŚI need your help.â Their new colleagueâs tenor voice wavered. He sounded afraid.Â
Dev was out the door before he could even respond.
â
Yâall, my deck is SO into this challenge. I dropped the Five of Swords while I was shuffling, and I was like, yeah, I know, itâs Enemies to Lovers today. Also, this is obviously fantasy, because full-time professor appointments exist, lol. Keep the fun coming, Meg, and thank youâdouble thank you because I used Finding the Fool for inspiration today!

âTell me you think about me.â
âI think about you. Of course I think about you.â

the trope: friends to lovers
the spread: i know you so well / there's so much i didn't know
the pull: The Sun / king of wands
- - - - -
Despite Kimmiâs fair and valid baby sister complaints, Micah has never seen Tai as anything other than an enigma. Not because she was mysterious or puzzling or hard to understand, but the opposite: Tai might as well have ridden into life arms open, legs astride a gleaming white horse, a rainbow banner waving proudly behind her wide smile.
But this Tai, here in front of her, gliding from one end of the built-in espresso machine to the other, brewing multiple, complicated coffee drinks with a flourish of her long fingers and a breath-catching wink?
thank you to @3am-tarot for hosting! we're halfway through, so for today's trope, i returned to my day one: hurt/comfort pairing - but from the other pov! feel free to pop into my ask box with your headcanons or metas, or reblog to support!

the trope: slow burn
the spread: a subtle hint / a major move
the pull: The Wheel / The Devil
- - - - -
This has been building for a while.
You know it.
They know it.
Nothing about this meeting tonight was clandestine. Unlike a game of roulette, you made strategic moves to get here. You plotted and manifested their presence. Reeled them in with bait made of bourbon and bad decisions.
Youâre hungry for them in a way that feels dangerous. Always have been, which is why youâve kept your distance. Why youâve never crossed the line. Why you disappeared, all those years agoâŚ
âCâmere,â you command. Soft, but firm.
They walk through the shadow of the valley of death, towards you.
thank you to @3am-tarot for hosting! oooooh baby this one's juicy! WHO ARE THEY? as always, feel free to pop into my ask box with your headcanons or metas, or reblog to support!

the trope: love triangle
the spread: you can only pick one / triads exist
the pull: nine of swords / ten of cups
- - - - -
He swirls his glass, thick fingers cradling the thin stem as tenderly as theyâd teased milk and honey from your tongue, and suddenly youâre wracked with guilt.
He should be enough.
Who are you to ask for more?
What can they offer you that you donât already have?
âYou look conflicted,â he observes. Curious, not upset.
Still, âIâm sorry,â you say, even though heâs told you not to apologize so much.
But he doesnât take you to task. If anything, he ignores your disobedience, rewarding you regardless.
âI want them too,â he smiles, and suddenly your world lies wide open.
