AT LONG LAST
the motherfucker I preordered a YEAR ago that was supposed to ship in JANUARY is FINALLY HERE!!!
You can tell Tarn is a well-written grooming victim because the collective fandom reaction to him was to turn him/how he acts as a result of being groomed into the butt of every joke and making him out to be irreparably warped, tainted, and evil because of what was done to him. But also the guy who groomed him said he was sorry and feels real bad about it so it's okay and why is Tarn being so unreasonable about wanting to hurt/kill the person who betrayed him? Smh
A Tarn headcanon that I want to use but haven't had the chance is about him code-switching the way he speaks out of surprise (or maybe character development in some fic scenario idk). This guy, back when he was Glitch, was delivering combat banter like "break their toys and send them running home crying." Petty as hell (which admittedly didn't change when he became Tarn) but also like... more crude and funny and "common" kind of humor compared to the present-day Tarn persona where, aside from pettily mimicking a guy's stammer, he tries to be all sophisticated and stuff.
I just really want there to be a scenario where Tarn is saying some shit like "Fool that you are, you falsely believed you could escape Decepticon Justice, here we arrive to dispel your ignorance with extreme prejudice" and then whoever he's hunting goes "your Megatron suck me good and hard thru my ports" and Tarn goes "you little shit I'm going to fucking kill you"
The other day I saw something that actually made the fandom's complete lack of acknowledgement towards Megatron grooming/brainwashing Tarn make a lot of sense, which was essentially a comment that implied something along the lines of 'Tarn made himself worse.'
Which like, I guess makes sense as a justification? If you just write off Dying of the Light and Tarn's entire existence as him just "choosing" to be "worse" I guess it's easy to just blame Tarn and coddle Megatron as the victim of the whole thing.
As opposed to the actual truth of canon which is that Tarn was not always Tarn, Tarn used to be Damus, Damus was nothing like Tarn at all, and it was Megatron's direct, malicious, targeted intervention that took Damus (normal guy) and made him into Tarn (zealot freak). And that the DJD wasn't Tarn's creation, it was Megatron's creation, because Megatron not only wrote the DJD rulebook but also directly trained them (at least the initial members of the DJD, including Tarn) to be brutal, sadistic killers. And that Tarn's mental breakdown in Dying of the Light and subsequent deathhunt on Megatron was just Tarn continuing to fulfill the role Megatron assigned to him, which was to hunt down traitors to the Decepticon cause and make them pay in pain and death. In other words, that Tarn was literally carrying out the exact purpose that Megatron groomed him for, in service to the ideology that Megatron shaped to be centered entirely around ruthlessness, cruelty, and subjugation. And that everything Tarn did as an evil person was merely a logical extension of the ideology Megatron brainwashed him into carrying out, not him randomly deciding to "make himself worse" one day bc he was angy at his daddy.
But sure. I guess, from a certain, very zoomed in and granular perspective, Tarn is evil because he just chose to be that way and no one could've possibly predicted him turning on his master who reshaped his entire life to serve his will and then abandoned him. It's not like Megatron radicalized him for no reason and then built him to be a ticking time bomb or anything. No, Tarn just... decided to make himself worse. One day, for no reason at all. Mmmkay.

I'm very particular with my "making fun of Tarn" humor bc he undoubtedly is dumb and pathetic and this is both part of his charm as a character and a haunting theme of how a person doesn't need to be particularly strong-willed or powerful to inflict great harm onto others. But in specific I hate "making fun of Tarn" humor in which people basically make fun of the fact that he's a groomed cult victim with zero acknowledgement at all that Tarn wasn't always Tarn (bonus points if it's done by people who like/stan Megatron who literally is the one who made him that way).
Like oh yeah make fun of Tarn for being a psycho stalker obsessed with Megatron it's not like, y'know, that's a parasocial relationship rhat Tarn was deliberately manipulated into cultivating, and ignore the fact that the (original) DJD members including Tarn were hand picked and trained by Megatron who also wrote their manual of operations. Tarn's so pathetic for being the victim of cult brainwashing is he just stupid or what lol
Tarn is kinda the Kylo Ren of Transformers tbh (randomly stereotyped as an incel/sexual predator/creep/etc and cast as irrevocably evil despite the fact that he was groomed into being evil by another much more evil bad guy who grooms and/or abuses him on screen, yet for some reason people are way more mad at him for being evil than they are at the guy who groomed him, also the grooming is either ignored or treated as a joke by the fandom where 50% of them are dudebros that make him some cishet masculine paragon of brutal violence and the other 50% of them are alleged progressives that are only capable of tepid, half-brained analyses consisting entirely of "He's evil because he's an incel")
Headcanoning Tarn as autistic not only bc of his canon behavior/mannerisms but because on a meta level his treatment by the fandom has very strong quintessential growing up autistic vibes of "singled out by everyone as being awful less for specific things he did and more because He's Just Innately And Unforgivably Weird/Gross/Creepy/Stupid/Cringe" you feel me?
