Dancing has been my most favorite thing to do since ages ago. it helps reducing my stress level, dancing makes it easier for me to express myself well.
do you by any chance know what’s the dance that I perform in the picture? It’s a traditional dance from West Sumatera, Indonesia. it’s a pretty famous one, you use a special tool in the dance, a small ceramic plate :) Yep!! It is Tari Piriang (re: Tari Piring or Plate dance, or so).
This dance is a kind of celebration performed by us, Minangkabaunese (the universal tribe in West Sumatera province), after the harvest of our rice (re: padi). what makes this dance so special is the extreme act in the climax point of the dance. you know what? in the middle of performing, one of the dancers or more, will step or even jumping along with the musics on a huge pile of broken glasses. sharp? well, of course it is ! sometimes, they even add more extreme acts other than just jumping on the pile. they lay down on the pile of the broken glass while an instrument player stand on the dancer while playing the instrument, “wash” their faces with the broken glasses as if it’s water, fire show, and performing fighting/duel act using a traditional weapon called “Kurambit” (It is a kind of sharp knife with half-round edge).
this is an extreme yet amazingly exciting dance. if you come to West Sumatera, you will surely get to see this dance performed pretty often, in a wedding party, and many kind of events.
