If nothing finite exists as substance, then the self is neither more illusory nor more “fake” than a mountain, a photon, or a state constitution. They are all modes of the same causal fabric, transient configurations of the one reality.

If only the whole (Nature, Substance) is self-caused, then everything within it is caused by something else.

Everything caused is therefore real but only as an effect or mode, not as a stand-alone being.

The self, being a psycho-biological process, is no less real than a tree or a thunderstorm; it’s simply real relationally, not absolutely.

So when mystics or pop philosophers say “the self is unreal,” they often mean “the self is not an eternal, independent essence.” But that does not make it unreal in the scientific or ontological sense; it just locates it correctly as a dynamic configuration of nature reflecting itself.
