today i set out to write a ray tracer for optical design simulation, and to my great surprise, i now have a ray tracer
things yet to be done include quantifying lens performance, building a catalog of material properties, supporting color, tolerance testing, figuring out how focus/zoom/aperture work, modeling reflection and absorption loss, and finally (the hard part) building a coefficient optimizer. the api already needs some work as well; there's not currently a great way of modeling a cemented doublet.
i found something really awesome just minutes ago: automatic differentiation! it's a thing in all the big ML libraries because it's important for gradient descent. it was stupidly easy to rework it in there and now we don't have to specify derivatives for surfaces! (aspherics are central to this project, so there will be all kinds of different curves involved. in fact none of these examples has a sphere, besides the flat surfaces of infinite radius.)
i should start actually documenting the sayings that i live by
we'll start off with:
people matter more than rules

PSA: keep your walkways clear! you need at minimum a clear path from anywhere you are to a fire exit, at least 24" wide all the way up. this is juh's decree, inherited from her father, Mr. Insurance himself. if you need more than 24", then you need more than 24". if you need additional paths, then you need additional paths. i don't care if you have to sweep piles of trash to the side to do it, but you need clear walkways. thank you for attending my theodore presentation.
