Tacking & Gybing
Tacking is the manoeuvre used in sailing to change direction by turning the bow of the boat through the wind, while gybing is the manoeuvre used to change direction by turning the stern of the boat through the wind. In both manoeuvres, the sails are trimmed and the direction of the wind changes relative to the boat, allowing it to move in a new direction. Tacking is used when the wind comes fromā¦

Random Nautical Fact: Port and Starboard Tack
Itās been a minute, so for this Random Nautical Fact Iām going back to basics with what it means to be on the port tack and what it means to be on the starboard tack.
If you are facing the front of the boat:
You are on the Port Tack if the wind is coming over the Port (left) side of the boat.
You are on the Starboard Tack is the wind is coming over the Starboard (right) side of the boat.
If youāre facing directly into the wind, you are whatās known as In Irons are youāre not going anywhere, no, literally, your boat is not moving except for whatever currents you might be in
If the wind is coming directly over the stern -- the back of the boat -- youāre running
If you are looking at me like āWTF are you on aboutā, as a cheat you can use the What Side of the Boat Are the Sails On trick for fore-and-aft or gaff-rigged vessels, i.e. Not Square Riggers: if the sails are on the starboard side, you are on the port tack, and if the sails are on the port side, you are on the starboard tack: meah, I know, itās opposite and lots of people find that bit counterintuitive.
Also, if youāre on the port tack, you have to give way to vessels on the starboard tack. Rules of the road, as it were: boats on the starboard tack get right of way. (Right of Way/Stand-On probably deserves its own Random Nautical Facts entry but itās midnight and Iām tired.)

So, I have what Iām sure is a VERY silly question to someone whoās actually sailed, but Iāve tried about a dozen google searches and cannot for the life of me figure out the answer: If you were on a ship, how would one give the command āturn the ship to the right?ā I just need this one line for a writing project Iām doing, but Im having so much trouble figuring out what would be accurate! Im so sorry to bother you about something so simple, and I appreciate any guidance you have. Thanks so much!
So, sailboats and sailing ships turn by tacking (if the desired course is upwind, i.e. into the wind), which turns the shipās bow (front) so that the side from which the wind blows changes, or by jibing (also called āwearingā on square-riggers) if the desired course is downwind, which turns the shipās stern (rear end) through the wind, also changing the side the wind is blowing from. Either will turn the ship 90 degrees. One of the things about sailing is you always have to be aware of wind direction to figure out how to get where you want to go.
āReady aboutā is the order to notify the crew that they will be tacking. The crew responds āReadyā, and the helmsman (the person at the wheel) will say āhelmās a leeāā or āLee Oā to indicate theyāve started turning.
Then, once the skipper is happy with the direction the ship is heading, the order is ātrim to course.ā
Tl;dr: āReady about! Helmās a lee!ā is probably what youāre looking for.
If everything I just said sounded like a giant pile of WTF, please let me know! Iām happy to try to re-explain.
Hello everyone! Sorry Idisnt post up anything over the weekend, I had a BBQ at my auntās place, so I was stuffed, and didnāt spend any time on any of my projects, and I was resting on Sunday (since I tend to need a full day to recharge, after socialising), but Iām not going to neglect my duties! As you can see, Iām working with fabric again, and yes, Iām going to make another cushion cover, but this time, Iāll be making it with a zipper closure! Ah! Iām so nervous! Iāve never worked with a zipper before, so itās an experiment, and if I get this right, I can finally upgrade my crochet, knitting and sewing projects! You donāt know how frustrating it is for me to have to settle for fold-over closures!!! If I manage to get this right, I might be able to start asking if any of yāall would want to buy my projects, but weāll wait and see for now. Thatās it from me today! Show me your projects and tell me if you have any advice for me! As always, donāt forget to like, subscribe, follow and share for more updates and new posts on featherscharm.com! Hello everyone! Tacking fabric today, practicing my sewing skills! Yes, itās going to be another cushion cover, because at the moment thatās all I can make. I will eventually change it up, so I can make more complicated things, but for now, sewing two squares together is the best I can do for now. I canāt make a straight seam yet, so working on something like this will definitely help me with that! So, what sewing projects are you guys working on! Let me know! And donāt forget to like, subscribe, follow and share for more updates and the latest post on featherscharm.com! The link is in my bio! See you all later!
